Noreen Samad,Farzana Yasmin,Natasha Manzoor 대한신경정신의학회 2019 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.16 No.12
Objective Depression is a prevalent condition that is costly to individuals and society. In view of a role of tryptophan (TRP), selenium (Se), vitamin D (Vit D), magnesium (Mg) and serotonin in depression, the present study concerns to evaluate the circulating levels of TRP, Se, Vit D, Mg and serotonin in depression as well as the correlation between TRP and other serum analytes is also established. Methods Healthy (n=48) and depressed (n=48) subjects were recruited and their blood samples were obtained after an overnight fast of 12 h, serum was stored for the determination of levels of TRP, Se, Vit D, Mg, and serotonin. Results Results show that levels of TRP, Se, Vit D, Mg, and serotonin were decreased in the depressed patient when compared to normal subjects. There is a direct correlation between TRP and Vit D, and TRP and Se while the inverse correlation between TRP and Mg, and TRP and serotonin in depressed subjects. The association among TRP and other biomarkers is non-significant. Conclusion In conclusion, depression is associated with deficiency of TRP, Se, Vit D, Mg, and serotonin displays the characteristics of biomarkers. The correlation between TRP and other biomarkers/trace elements is also important in depression.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally but has an even more significant impact in developing countries. Pakistan has the highest prevalence among Asian countries. A general lack of public awareness regarding the disease often results in late diagnosis and poor treatment outcomes. The literacy rate of the Southern Punjab (Pakistan) is low compared to its Northern part. It is therefore vital that university students and especially medical students develop a sound knowledge about the disease so that they can spread awareness to others who may be less educated. This study therefore considers current knowledge and understanding about the early signs of breast cancer amongst a study group of medical and non-medical university students of the Southern Punjab, Pakistan. A cross-sectional descriptive analysis of the university students was carried out using a self-administered questionnaire to assess their awareness of breast cancer from March to May 2014. A total of 566 students participated in this study, out of which 326 were non-medical and 240 were from a medical discipline. Statistical analysis was carried out using Graph Pad Prism Version 5 with a significance level set at p<0.05. The mean age of the non medical and medical participants was 23 (SD 2.1) and 22 (SD 1.3) years, respectively. Less than 35% students were aware of the early warning signs of the breast cancer development. Knowledge of medical students about risk factors was significantly better than the non medical ones, but on the whole was insufficient. Our study indicated that knowledge regarding breast cancer was generally insufficient amongst the majority of the university students (75% non-medical and 55% medical) of Southern Punjab, Pakistan. This study highlights the need to formulate an awareness campaign and to organize conferences to promote breast cancer awareness among students in this region.
Discount Interference Pricing Mechanism for Data Offloading in D2D Communications
Noreen, Shama,Saxena, Navrati,Roy, Abhishek IEEE 2018 IEEE COMMUNICATIONS LETTERS Vol.22 No.8

Offloading in device-to-device (D2D) communications is recognized as a promising solution for reducing the traffic load of cellular networks. However, in underlay D2D communications, the cellular users (CUEs) suffer from severe cross-tier interference from D2D users. To keep this interference under a certain limit, the cellular base station (CBS) controls the transmit power of D2D users by pricing the interference power generated at it on shared subchannels. Moreover, D2D users can help the CBS by sharing its content with nearby CUEs, after receiving monetary incentives from CBS. In this letter, we propose a discount interference pricing scheme for D2D offloading. In the proposed framework, the CBS encourages some users, acting as D2D transmitters to provide service to CUEs, thereby improving its overall economic efficiency. In exchange, the CBS provides D2D users a discount on the interference price. We utilize a two-stage non-cooperative game to analytically model this scenario. Simulations results affirm that both CBS and D2D users can benefit from such cooperation and significantly increase their utility by employing the proposed discount interference pricing mechanism.

Optimal path planning in cluttered environment using RRT*-AB
Noreen, I.,Khan, A.,Ryu, H.,Doh, N. L.,Habib, Z. SPRINGER SCIENCE + BUSINESS MEDIA 2018 INTELLIGENT SERVICE ROBOTICS Vol.11 No.1

Rapidly exploring Random Tree Star (RRT*) has gained popularity due to its support for complex and high-dimensional problems. Its numerous applications in path planning have made it an active area of research. Although it ensures probabilistic completeness and asymptotic optimality, its slow convergence rate and large dense sampling space are proven problems. In this paper, an off-line planning algorithm based on RRT* named RRT*-adjustable bounds (RRT*-AB) is proposed to resolve these issues. The proposed approach rapidly targets the goal region with improved computational efficiency. Desired objectives are achieved through three novel strategies, i.e., connectivity region, goal-biased bounded sampling, and path optimization. Goal-biased bounded sampling is performed within boundary of connectivity region to find the initial path. Connectivity region is flexible enough to grow for complex environment. Once path is found, it is optimized gradually using node rejection and concentrated bounded sampling. Final path is further improved using global pruning to erode extra nodes. Robustness and efficiency of proposed algorithm is tested through experiments in different structured and unstructured environments cluttered with obstacles including narrow and complex maze cases. The proposed approach converges to shorter path with reduced time and memory requirements than conventional RRT* methods.

Background and objectives: Chromosomal abnormalities play an important role in genesis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and have prognostic implications. Five major risk stratifying fusion genes in ALL are BCR-ABL, MLL-AF4, ETV6-RUNX11, E2A-PBX1 and SIL-TAL1. This work aimed to detect common chromosomal translocations and associated fusion oncogenes in adult ALL patients and study their relationship with clinical features and treatment outcome. Methods: We studied fusion oncogenes in 104 adult ALL patients using RT-PCR and interphase-FISH at diagnosis and their association with clinical characteristics and treatment outcome. Results: Five most common fusion genes i.e. BCR-ABL (t 9; 22), TCF3-PBX1 (t 1; 19), ETV6-RUNX1 (t 12; 21), MLL-AF4 (t 4; 11) and SIL-TAL1 (Del 1p32) were found in 82/104 (79%) patients. TCF3-PBX1 fusion gene was associated with lymphadenopathy, SIL-TAL1 positive patients had frequent organomegaly and usually presented with a platelets count of less than $50{\times}10^9/l$. Survival of patients with fusion gene ETV6-RUNX1 was better when compared to patients harboring other genes. MLL-AF4 and BCR-ABL positivity characterized a subset of adult ALL patients with aggressive clinical behaviour and a poor outcome. Conclusions: This is the first study from Pakistan which investigated the frequency of5 fusion oncogenes in adult ALL patients, and their association with clinical features, treatment response and outcome. Frequencies of some of the oncogenes were different from those reported elsewhere and they appear to be associated with distinct clinical characteristics and treatment outcome. This information will help in the prognostic stratification and risk adapted management of adult ALL patients.
