Nakai, Masayoshi,Koshika, Norihide,Kawano, Kenichi,Hirakawa, Kiyoaki,Wada, Akira Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat Korea 2012 International journal of high-rise buildings Vol.1 No.3
This paper introduces the outlines of review and approval processes, general criteria and usual practices taken in Japan for the seismic design of high-rise buildings. The structural calculations are based on time-history analyses followed by performance evaluations. This paper also introduces structural design of two high-rise buildings: one is a 100 m high reinforced concrete residential building, and the other is a 300 m high steel building for mixed use.
Performance-based Wind-resistant Design for High-rise Structures in Japan
Nakai, Masayoshi,Hirakawa, Kiyoaki,Yamanaka, Masayuki,Okuda, Hirofumi,Konishi, Atsuo Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat Korea 2013 International journal of high-rise buildings Vol.2 No.3
This paper introduces the current status of high-rise building design in Japan, with reference to some recent projects. Firstly, the design approval system and procedures for high-rise buildings and structures in Japan are introduced. Then, performance-based wind-resistant design of a 300 m-high building, Abeno Harukas, is introduced, where building configuration, superstructure systems and various damping devices are sophisticatedly integrated to ensure a higher level of safety and comfort against wind actions. Next, design of a 213 m-high building is introduced with special attention to habitability against the wind-induced horizontal motion. Finally, performance-based wind-resistant design of a 634 m-high tower, Tokyo Sky Tree, is introduced. For this structure, the core column system was adopted to satisfy the strict design requirements due to the severest level of seismic excitations and wind actions.

A total of 526 domestic and experimental animals in Miyagi prefecture, Japan were investigated for fecal carriage of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. C. jejuni was detected in chickens (8.2%), dogs (6.3%), pigs (4.3%), cattle (1.8%) and hamsters (1.4%). C. coli was only detected from pigs (20.7%). Drug susceptibility test was performed on 5 strains of C. jejuni isolated from chickens and 13 strains of C. coli isolated from pigs to tylosin (TS), thianphenicol (TP), carbadox (CDX), chroltetracyclin (CTC), vancomycin (VCM), cefoperazone (CPZ), latamoxef (LMOX), GM were highly effective and CTC, CP and PL were moderately effective against both C. jejuni and C. coli. TS and TPH were moderately effective against C. jejuni; however, they were less effective to C. coli. One strain of C. jejuni against CTC considered to be drug resistant. The results suggest that C. jejuni and C. coli can be controlled by several drugs effectively, although a drug resistant strain exists.
THE COMBINATION EFFECT OF SULFAMETHOXAZOLE AND TRIMETHOPRIM AGAINST ANIMAL INTESTINAL BACTERIA
Nakai, Y.,Matsumoto, H.,Ogimoto, K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1991 Animal Bioscience Vol.4 No.3
Combination effects of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) against nine gram positive bacterial strains and 43 gram negative bacterial strains which included 40 strains of animal intestinal bacteria were studied in vitro. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of SMX and TMP alone and 20:1 (SMX : TMP) mixture (ST) were investigated by the method recommended by Ad Hoc Committee of the Japan Society of Chemotherapy for the Evaluation of Sensitivity Testing Methods for Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. MICs of ST were more potentiated than those of SMX alone in 8 of 9 gram positive strains and 40 of 43 gram negative strains. Especially, 38 strains of 40 intestinal bacteria showed significant susceptibility to ST as compared to SMX. These results suggest a strong synergistic activity of ST mixture against animal intestinal bacteria, The activity was considered to be comparable to those of other current antibiotics.

A mixed infection of Haemophilus paragallinarum (Hpg), Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and M. synoviae (Ms) was detected in layers of a poultry farm in Iwate prefecture in Japan by pathological, serological and bacteriological investigation. Hpg strains were isolated from three of five birds investigated and all strains were identified to be type C. The Hpg isolates were more susceptible in vitro to a combination of sulfamonomethoxine and ormetoprim (Ektecin) than each of sulfamethoxasol, sulfamonomethoxine, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, streptomycin, erythromycin and thianphinicol. After a total of six days' medication of 1% feed additive Ektecin, symptoms of infectious coryza of hens in the farm almost disappeared and no Hpg was detected even from birds showing nasal discharge.

It has been proposed that mechanically induced tension is the critical factor in the induction of muscle hypertrophy. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in this process are still under investigation. In the present study, the effect of mechanical stretch on intracellular signaling for protein translation initiation and elongation was studied in C2C12 myoblasts. Cells were grown on a silicone elastomer chamber and subjected to 30-min of 5 or 15% constant static or cyclic (60 cycles/min) uniaxial stretch. Western blot analyses revealed that p70 S6 kinase (p70S6K) and eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF2), which are the markers for translation initiation and peptide chain elongation, respectively, were activated by both static and cyclic stretch. The magnitude of activation was greater in response to the 15% cyclic stretch. Cyclic stretch also increased the phosphorylation of MAP kinases (p38 MAPK, ERK1/2 and JNK). However, the pharmacological inhibition of MAP kinases did not block the stretch-induced activation of p70S6K and eEF2. An inhibitor of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) blocked the stretch-induced phosphorylation of p70S6K but did not affect the eEF2 activation. A broad-range tyrosine kinase inhibitor, genistein, blocked the stretch-induced activation of p70S6K and eEF2, whereas Src tyrosine kinase and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors did not. These results suggest that the stretch-induced activation of protein translation initiation and elongation in mouse myoblast cell lines is mediated by tyrosine kinase(s), except for Src kinase or JAK.
Viral diseases of Japanese flounder ( Paralichthys olivaceus ) in Japan
Nakai,Toshihiro 한국어병학회 1993 한국어병학회지 Vol.6 No.2
With the rapid progress in seed production techniques, aquaculture production of economically important species of marine fish has been accelerated in Japan. Howecer, mass mortalities due to viral infections as well as other microbial infections have often occurred during the seed production and grow-out stages. Among these diseases, four viral diseases have been known in cultured Japanese flounder(Paralichthys olivaceus) since around 1980. In this paper, viral diseases of cultured flounder in Japan are briefly reviewed, with special attention to two viral diseases. viral epidermal hyperplasia and rhabdovirus infection which are relatively important because of their frequent occurrence. Viral epidermal hyperplasia is characterized by fin opacity and associated with high mortality in larval flounder Electron microscopy of affected epidermal cells and transmission experiments with tissue filtrates demonstrated that the disease was caused by a herpesvirus but the agent has not been isolated in fish cell lines. On the other hand, rhabdovires infection occurrs in juvenile and production size fish with hemorrhage in the skeltal muscle and fins, congestion of the gonads, and ascites, A rhabdovirys was isolated in RTG-2 cells from the diseased flounder as a causative agent. which was designated hirame rhabdovirus (HRV) or Rahbdovirus olivaceus. HRV is serologically distinguishable from other known fish rhabdoviruses. Intensive researches on these viral diseases started in 1980th. but properties of the causative agents and infection mechanisms have not been fully investigated. This results in difficulty in controlling these diseases.
