A Case-Control Study on the Predictors of Neonatal Near-Miss: Implications for Public Health Policy and Practice

        Johnson, Avita Rose,Sunny, Sobin,Nikitha, Ramola,Thimmaiah, Sulekha,Rao, Suman P.N. The Korean Society of Neonatology 2021 Neonatal medicine Vol.28 No.3

Purpose: Neonatal near miss (NNM) allows for the detection of risk factors associated with serious newborn complications and death, the prevention of which could reduce neonatal mortality. This study was conducted with the objective of identifying predictors for NNM in a tertiary hospital in Bangalore city. Methods: This was an unmatched case-control study involving 120 NNM cases and 120 controls. NNM was determined using Pileggi-Castro's pragmatic and management criteria. Data was collected from in-patient hospital records and interviews of postpartum mothers. Multiple logistic regression of exposure variables was performed to calculate adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Significant predictors were maternal age ≥30 years (AOR, 5.32; 95% CI, 1.12 to 9.29; P=0.041), inadequate antenatal care (ANC) (AOR, 8.35; 95% CI, 1.98 to 51.12; P=0.032), <3 ultrasound scans during pregnancy (AOR, 12.5; 95% CI, 1.60 to 97.27; P=0.016), maternal anaemia (AOR, 18.96; 95% CI, 3.10 to 116.02; P=0.001), and any one obstetric complication (hypertensive disorder in pregnancy, diabetes in pregnancy, preterm premature rupture of membranes, prolonged labour, obstructed labour, malpresentation) (AOR, 4.34; 95% CI, 1.26 to 14.95; P=0.02). Conclusion: The predictors of NNM identified has important implications for public health policy and practice whose modifications can improve NNM. These include expanding essential ANC package to include ultrasound scans, ensuring World Health Organization recommendations of eight ANC visits, capacity building at all levels of health care to strengthen routine ANC and obstetric care for effective screening, referral and management of obstetric complications.

      • Perception and Practices on Screening and Vaccination for Carcinoma Cervix among Female Healthcare Professional in Tertiary Care Hospitals in Bangalore, India

Swapnajaswanth, M.,Suman, G.,Suryanarayana, S.P.,Murthy, N.S. Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.15

Background:Cervical cancer is potentially the most preventable and treatable cancer. Despite the known efficacy of cervical screening, a significant number of women do not avail themselves of the procedure due to lack of awareness. Objectives: This study was conducted to elicit information on the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) regarding screening (Pap test) and vaccination for carcinoma cervix among female doctors and nurses in a tertiary care hospital in Bangalore and to assess barriers to acceptance of the Pap test. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted with semi-structured, self-administered questionnaire among female health professionals. The study subjects were interviewed for KAP regarding risk factors for cancer cervix, Pap test and HPV vaccination for protection against carcinoma cervix. Results: Higher proportion of doctors 45 (78.9%) had very good knowledge as compared to only 13 (13.3%) of the nurses, about risk factors for cancer cervix and Pap test (p=0.001). As many as 138(89.6%) of the study subjects had favorable attitude towards Pap test and vaccination, but 114 (73.6%) of the study subjects never had a Pap test and the most common reason 35 (31%) for not practicing was absence of disease symptoms. Conclusions: In spite of good knowledge and attitudes towards cancer cervix and Pap test being good, practice remained low among the study subjects and most common reasons for not undergoing Pap test was absence of disease symptoms. The independent predictors of ever having a Pap test done was found to be the occupation and duration of married life above 9yrs. Hence there is a strong need to improve uptake of Pap test by health professionals by demystifying the barriers.

Effects of Aging Temperature on the Mechanical Properties and Precipitation Behavior of a Pre-strained Al–Cu–Mg–Ag Alloy

        Suman Paik,N. Naveen Kumar,B. K. Dutta,R. Tewari,P. V. Durgaprasad 대한금속ᆞ재료학회 2023 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.29 No.2

This article investigates the deformation behaviour and fracture characteristics of copper single crystals by uniaxial tensileexperiments and compares the results with crystal plasticity simulations. Quasi-static tensile tests were carried out toinclude different stress–strain states by varying the crystal orientation with respect to specimen axis after determining theinitial orientation by Electron Backscatter Diffraction. The different ductile modes of failure of single crystals due to shearafter loading were examined. Thereafter, by employing the scanning electron microscopy and theoretical slip trace analysis, orientations of slip traces of deformed crystals were determined. Experimental results were then rationalised by performingcrystal plasticity finite element simulations, presuming cross-slip and associated dislocation dissociation into partials playan influential role on the orientation dependence of the material. A continuum ductile damage criterion was coupled withplasticity on capturing the slip localisation caused by material softening. Comparison between experimentally measuredand numerically obtained stress–strain data, texture evolution and fracture angles were subsequently evaluated. An evaluationhas also been made by comparing the identities of active slip modes attained from experiments with that of determinedfrom simulations.

CERTAIN MODULAR RELATIONS FOR REMARKABLE PRODUCT OF THETA-FUNCTIONS

        M. S. MAHADEVA NAIKA,K. Sushan Bairy,N. P. SUMAN 장전수학회 2014 Proceedings of the Jangjeon mathematical society Vol.17 No.3

At scattered places of his second notebook, Ramanujan recorded several P Q mixed modular equations with four moduli. In this paper, we establish several new P Q mixed modular equations analogous to those recorded by Ramanujan in his notebooks. Employing these, we establish new modular relations for Ramanujan's remarkable product of theta-functions.
