The effect of UV-C irradiation and EDTA on the uptake of Co2+ by antimony oxide in the presence and absence of competing cations Ca2+ and Ni2+

        Leena Malinen,Eveliina Repo,Risto Harjula,Nina Huittinen 한국원자력학회 2022 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.54 No.2

In nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities the removal of cobalt from radioactive liquid waste isneeded to reduce the radioactivity concentration in effluents. In liquid wastes containing strong organiccomplexing agents such as EDTA cobalt removal can be problematic due to the high stability of the CoEDTA complex. In this study, the removal of cobalt from NaNO3 solutions using antimony oxide (Sb2O3)synthesized from potassium hexahydroxoantimonate was investigated in the absence and presence ofEDTA. The uptake studies on the ion exchange material were conducted both in the dark (absence of UVlight) and under UV-C irradiation. Ca2þ or Ni2þ were included in the experiments as competing cations totest the selectivity of the ion exchanger. Results show that UV-C irradiation noticeably enhances thecobalt sorption efficiency on the antimony oxide. It was shown that nickel decreased the sorption ofcobalt to a higher extent than calcium. Finally, the sorption data collected for Co2þ on antimony oxidewas modeled using six different isotherm models. The Sips model was found to be the most suitablemodel to describe the sorption process. The Dubinin-Radushkevich model was further used to calculatethe adsorption energy, which was found to be 6.2 kJ mol1

Dynamic 18F-FDG PET for Assessment of Tumor Physiology in Two Breast Carcinoma Xenografts

        Alexandr Kristian,Line B. Nilsen,Kathrine Roe,Mona-Elisabeth Revheim,Olav Engebråten,Gunhild M. Mælandsmo,Ruth Holm,Eirik Malinen,Therese Seierstad 대한핵의학회 2013 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.47 No.3

Purpose To compare dynamic 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-Dglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) parameters in two selected human breast cancer xenografts and to evaluate associations with immunohistochemistry and histology. Procedures Dynamic 18F-FDG PETof luminal-like MAS98.06and basal-like MAS98.12 xenografts was performed, and the compartmental transfer rates (k1,k2,k3), blood volume fraction (vB) and metabolic rate of 18F-FDG(MRFDG) were estimated from pharmacokinetic model analysis. After sacrifice, analyses of hypoxia (pimonidazole), proliferation (Ki-67), vascularization (CD31), glucose transport receptor (GLUT1) and necrosis (HE)was performed. The level of hexokinase 2 (HK2) was estimated from Western blot analysis. Results The 18F-FDG uptake curves for the two xenografts were significantly different (p<0.05). k1 and vB were higher for MAS98.12 (p<0.01), while k3 was higher for MAS98.06(p<0.01). MAS98.12 had a higher fraction of stromal tissue and higher microvessel density (MVD), and it was less necrotic and hypoxic thanMAS98.06.MAS98.12 had stronger positive GLUT1 staining and lower Ki-67 than MAS98.06. In both models significant correlations were found between k1and the GLUT1 score, between k3 and the level of HK2, and between vB and MVD. Conclusions Significant differences in dynamic 18F-FDG parameters between the two human breast cancer xenografts were found. The differences could be explained by underlying histological and physiological characteristics.

Herschel and SCUBA-2 observations of dust emission in a sample of Planck cold clumps

        Juvela, Mika,He, Jinhua,Pattle, Katherine,Liu, Tie,Bendo, George,Eden, David J.,Fehé,r, Orsolya,Michel, Fich,Fuller, Gary,Hirano, Naomi,Kim, Kee-Tae,Li, Di,Liu, Sheng-Yuan,Malinen, Johanna,Marsh Springer-Verlag 2018 Astronomy and astrophysics Vol.612 No.-

Context. Analysis of all-sky Planck submillimetre observations and the IRAS 100 μm data has led to the detection of a population of Galactic cold clumps. The clumps can be used to study star formation and dust properties in a wide range of Galactic environments.

Aims. Our aim is to measure dust spectral energy distribution (SED) variations as a function of the spatial scale and the wavelength.

Methods. We examined the SEDs at large scales using IRAS, Planck, and Herschel data. At smaller scales, we compared JCMT/SCUBA-2 850 μm maps with Herschel data that were filtered using the SCUBA-2 pipeline. Clumps were extracted using the Fellwalker method, and their spectra were modelled as modified blackbody functions.

Results. According to IRAS and Planck data, most fields have dust colour temperatures TC ~ 14-18 K and opacity spectral index values of β = 1.5-1.9. The clumps and cores identified in SCUBA-2 maps have T ~ 13 K and similar β values. There are some indications of the dust emission spectrum becoming flatter at wavelengths longer than 500 μm. In fits involving Planck data, the significance is limited by the uncertainty of the corrections for CO line contamination. The fits to the SPIRE data give a median β value that is slightly above 1.8. In the joint SPIRE and SCUBA-2 850 μm fits, the value decreases to β ~ 1.6. Most of the observed T-β anticorrelation can be explained by noise.

Conclusions. The typical submillimetre opacity spectral index β of cold clumps is found to be ~1.7. This is above the values of diffuse clouds, but lower than in some previous studies of dense clumps. There is only tentative evidence of a T-β anticorrelation and β decreasing at millimetre wavelengths.
