Survey of IEC61850 M2M Interface based on IoT Protocols in Smart Grid Environment

Monitoring and control of electricity power network have been led to introducing Smart Grid (SG). All previous dispersed attempts in automation of each part of electricity network is affected by this novel approach to provide a unified environment. IEC 61850 as the communication standard of substation automation is one of the standards which affected by the movement of power grid towards the intelligent. The standard committee has been realized precisely well considering fast innovation of communication technology by defining IEC 61850 stat-of-theart way of specifying communication standard. The paper depicts although there have been lots of efforts to fulfill smart grid environment requirements by introducing new parts of standard and editing existence parts during recent years such as introducing distributed generation equipment in data modeling and eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) protocol for mapping standard on Wide Area Network, it is necessary to investigate other Internet of Things (IOT) protocols which are suggested in other literature and laboratory experiences and compare all characteristics of them including Quality of Services (QoS), implementation infrastructure requirements and future development based on IEC 61850 message specifications such as message pattern and latency constraint.
