Bio-inspired green synthesis of sunlight driven AuNPs/RGO nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic activity and their promising electrochemical performance

        Prasannadevi R.,Vigneshwaran J.,Suthakaran S.,Jose Sujin P.,Dhanapandian S.,Krishnakumar N. 한국물리학회 2022 Current Applied Physics Vol.43 No.-

The present study demonstrates the bio-inspired synthesis of AuNPs/RGO nanocomposites using grape seed proanthocyanidin (GSP) towards photocatalysis and supercapacitor applications. The obtained nanocomposites were characterized using various analytical studies, which confirms the AuNPs are successfully decorated on the graphene nanosheets. The photocatalytic performance of AuNPs/RGO nanocomposites exhibit higher photocatalytic activity (97% and 88% for MB and MO) in comparison with GO and RGO after 60 min of irradiation. Furthermore, the electrochemical supercapactive performances of the AuNPs/RGO nanocomposites were studied by electrochemical techniques, which disclosed that the AuNPs/RGO nanocomposites possess a better specific capacitance (370 F g-1) compared with RGO nanosheets (67 F g-1) at a potential scan rate of 10 mV s-1. These improved performances are associated with a higher specific surface area and hindrance of photo - generated charge carrier recombination in AuNPs/RGO nanosheets. These synergistic performance may further evinced that the biogenic nanocomposites is a promising candidate for photocatalysis and supercapacitor applications.

Changing Characteristics of Droughts over Kerala, India: Inter-Annual Variability and Trend

        Abhilash S.,E. K. Krishnakumar,P. Vijaykumar,A. K. Sahai,B. Chakrapani,Girish Gopinath 한국기상학회 2019 Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences Vol.55 No.1

Realized changes in the climate over Kerala received more attention during recent times under the back to back drought conditions prevailing over the state. The year 2016 registered as one of the worst and extreme drought year over Kerala in recent past. This extreme drought condition may be attributed to the combined effect of realized changes in the mean climate state as well as the climate variability. Both the recent and historic drought events over Kerala is examined and its possible impacts on different sectors like agriculture and water resource are studied using the standardized precipitation index (SPI). Historical occurrence of both the short term and long term water stress associated with deficit rainfall during monsoon and postmonsoon season is presented in the paper. It is found that south west monsoon rainfall over Kerala is decreasing over south Kerala during recent decades, whereas the post-monsoon rainfall is found to be increasing especially over south Kerala. There exists a weak relationship between Pacific SSTand Kerala rainfall. Trend analysis of SPI on different time scale showed negative trend and that negative trend increases with increasing time scale.

Evaluation of mucoadhesive nanoparticle based nasal vaccine

        D. Krishnakumar,D. Kalaiyarasi,K. S. Jaganathan 한국약제학회 2012 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.42 No.6

The main objective of this study was to prepare Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) loaded poly(lactic-coglycolic acid) (PLGA), Trimethyl chitosan (TMC) as well as TMC-coated PLGA nanoparticles and compare their efficacy as nasal vaccine. The developed formulations were characterized for size, zeta potential, entrapment efficiency, mucin adsorption ability, Dentritic cells interaction, in vitro and in vivo studies. PLGA nanoparticles demonstrated negative zeta potential whereas TMC and PLGA–TMC nanoparticles showed higher positive zeta potential. Results indicated that TMC and PLGA–TMC nanoparticles demonstrated substantially higher mucin adsorption when compared to PLGA nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were nontoxic to isolated nasal epithelium. Immunogenicity increased as a function of particle size upon nasal administration. HBsAg encapsulated in PLGA–TMC particles elicited a significantly higher secretory (IgA) immune response compared to that encapsulated in PLGA and TMC particles. Similar to in vivo immune response data, fluorescent-labelled nanoparticles of smaller size are taken up more efficiently by rat alveolar macrophages compared to those of larger size. Results indicated that alum based HBsAg induced strong humoral but less mucosal immunity. However, PLGA–TMC nanoparticles induced stronger immune response at both of the fronts as compared to generated by PLGA or TMC nanoparticles. Present study demonstrates that PLGA–TMC nanoparticles with specific size range can be a better carrier adjuvant for nasal subunit vaccines.

Performance evaluation of plasma nitrided 316L stainless steel during long term high temperature sodium exposure

        Singh Akash,Thirumurugesan R.,Krishnakumar S.,Rani Revati,Chandramouli S.,Parameswaran P.,Mythili R. 한국원자력학회 2023 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.55 No.4

Enhancement of wear resistance of components used in fast reactors is necessary for long service life of the components. Plasma nitriding is a promising surface modification technology to impart high hardness and improved wear resistance of various steel components. This study discusses the characterization of chrome nitrided SS316L casing ring used in secondary sodium pump of fast breeder reactor and its stability under long term sodium exposure. Microstructural and hardness analysis showed that stress relieved component could be chrome nitrided successfully to a thickness of about 100 μm. Assessment of in-sodium performance of the chrome nitrided casing ring subjected to long term exposure up to 5000h at 550°C, showed retention of chrome nitrided layer with a case depth almost similar to that before sodium exposure. A slight decrease in the hardness was observed due to prolonged high temperature sodium exposure. Tribological studies indicate very low coefficient of friction indicating the retention of good wear resistance of the coating even after long term sodium exposure.
