        The Interpretation of Ironic Utterances

        Jiyon Cook(국지연) 담화·인지언어학회 2005 담화와 인지 Vol.12 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of understanding verbal irony in cognitive pragmatics (relevance theory). According to Sperber and Wilson (1995), an ironic utterance is a second degree of interpretation of someone's thought or utterance; the speaker echoes an attributed opinion to express her attitude of disapproval or ridicule, while dissociating herself from it. In this paper, we will show that perceiving a given utterance as ironic depends on the listener's ability to catch and understand the speaker's intention, and that an echoic interpretation of an attributed thought, in relevance-theoretic terms, can be applied to more ironic utterances than Grice's account.

화용론적 관점에서 메아리 발화의 명시의미 분석

        국지연(Cook Jiyon) 담화·인지언어학회 2009 담화와 인지 Vol.16 No.3

From the point of view of cognitive pragmatics, it is claimed that the relevance of an echoic utterance lies in expressing the speaker's attitude toward an echoed element (Sperber and Wilson 1995, Wilson and Sperber 2004). However, why the speaker chooses the echoic form and how the hearer discerns the speaker's attitude (higher-level explicature) have not been developed in detail yet. This paper attempts to examine these issues while focusing on the speaker's preference in using the language in relation to the hearer. We point out that the speaker can express his dissatisfaction or satisfaction with a previous utterance, resorting to explicature and/or implicature. Using echoic utterances the speaker may reveal dissatisfaction with the other's use of language without threatening the relationship in a circumstance while in another circumstance the speaker may show sympathy to maintain a close relationship with the hearer. The analysis presented within this paper suggests that the hearer's ability to share this kind of metapragmatic awareness can influence his recovering higher-level explicature.

        '말해진 것'의 명시의미

        국지연(Cook Jiyon),이성범(Lee Sungbom) 담화·인지언어학회 2007 담화와 인지 Vol.14 No.2

Although many studies have explored speaker meaning, most of them have focused on 'what is implicated' and relatively little attention has been paid to 'what is said'. The meaning of ‘what is said’ is usually considered unequivocally explicit and has not been much investigated. This paper aims to show that the explicit meaning of utterance ranges further than Grice's (1975) notion of 'what is said'. To do this we present that as part of speaker meaning a propositional content of 'what is said' can be constructed through pragmatic inference. In particular, we attempt to develop Carston's (2000) idea that deriving the explicit content of utterance ("explicature") involves pragmatic processes such as free enrichment, saturation and ad hoc concept construction as well as reference assignment and disambiguation. Supporting evidence for this proposal is found in the determination of what is said in ordinary public advertisements in Korean. It is observed that it often occurs in some public advertisements that the speaker imposes such tasks upon listeners intentionally in order to both effectively convey the implicated content (implicature) and engage listeners' cognitive environments. We account for the use of these unspoken parts by proposing that some gap between what is said and implicature can be bridged by the conception of explicature. This study illustrates that the understanding of what is said is closely tied to the listener's search for optimal relevance.
