Effects of Carbohydrate Availability on Growth and Flowering in Chrysanthemum under Different Photoperiods

        Byung-Joo Lee,Mi-Kyoung Won,Euy-Seog Yang,Jong Suk Lee,Jeffrey Gordon Atherton 한국원예학회 2004 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.45 No.6

Carbohydrate production and partitioning were examined under different photoperiods in chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum cv. Envy). Sucrose was the principal sugar at the shoot tips of chrysanthemum analyzed under inductive 10 h photoperiods. Fructose and glucose were only present in smaller quantities compared to sucrose. Sucrose content at the shoot tip increased more than 1.5-fold within a day in 10 and 13 h short photoperiods and remained static for 9 days compared to vegetative plants in 16 h photoperiods. Growth parameters such as total dry weight, leaf area, absolute growth rate, and final leaf number increased as photoperiods extended from 10 to 16 h, whereas floral development and partitioning of carbohydrate to floral parts measured by flower weight ratio were highest under 10 h photoperiods. Net assimilation rate was highest at 10 h photoperiods followed by 16 and 13 h photoperiods, indicating higher productivity of source leaves at 10 h photoperiods than of 13 or 16 h photoperiods.

Floral Development of Chrysanthemum Influenced by Photoperiod

        Byung-Joo Lee,Mi-Kyoung Won,Won-Chun Choi,Euy-Seog Yang,Jong-Suk Lee,Jeffrey Gordon Atherton 한국원예학회 2004 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.45 No.3

A development of floral morphogenesis was presented from the vegetative to the late reproductive stages by photoperiod for chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivars ‘Envy’ and ‘Lady Time’. To quantify the flowering process, times to specific stage assigned numerical values. When the developments of floral stages were plotted against time after the commencement of short-day induction, they produced nearly straight lines on a graph and it was possible to compare the flowering progress among various photoperiod treatments. Optimum photoperiod for progress to anthesis was 10 h in both cultivars. Plants grown under 10 h photoperiod reached anthesis up to seven days earlier than those grown at 8 or 12 h photoperiods. In continuous 14 and 16 h photoperiods, both cultivars eventually initiated flower buds (crown buds), which failed to reach anthesis. Final leaf number at anthesis in ‘Envy’ was less affected by photoperiod. While overall plant growth, measured as dry weight, stem length and leaf area, increased as photoperiods were extended from 10 to 16 h.

Effects of Exogenous Sucrose Supply on Growth and Flowering of Chrysanthemum

        Byung-Joo Lee,Mi-Kyoung Won,Ha-Seong Park,Euy-Seog Yang,Jong Suk Lee,Jeffrey Gordon Atherton 한국원예학회 2004 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.45 No.6

An attempt to increase the level of sucrose available to the plants was made by supplying sucrose exogenously through cut stem xylem or via stem injection system in chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum cv. Envy). Plants fed with sucrose solution developed flower-bud earlier and flower diameter was increased as compared to that of sucrose-free control. In plants supplied with distilled water, flower development and plant growth were slow but leaf area and chlorophyll content were highest as compared to the plants supplied with sucrose solution. These results clearly show that the plants subjected to sucrose-free distilled water maximize the source activity, i.e., the photosynthesis for the carbohydrate production. The stem injection system delivered sucrose to the plants over 35 days. The volume injected over that period decreased at all treatments and the solution uptake for plants injected with sucrose-free distilled water was greater than those injected with sucrose solutions. Sucrose solution supplied by the stem injection system also advanced floral development similar to that seen in the experiment of sucrose supply through xylem. However, there was no significant difference in the final leaf number, suggesting that flower initiation was not affected by sucrose supply under short day condition.
