Video-on-Demand services are increasing rapidly nowadays. The load on servers can be very high, even exceeding their capacity. For popular contents, we can use a Periodic Broadcast (PB) strategy using multicast to serve all clients. Recent development of PB uses multiple channels broadcasting for segments of movies in certain patterns, so that users only need to wait for a small segment to start the service. However, users need higher download capacity to download multiple segments at a time. In order to compensate for this, a proxy server can help to reduce download bandwidth requirements by holding some segments for a certain time. This research will focus on more recent PB schemes that couldn't be covered by previous Proxy-Assisted Periodic Broadcast strategies.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network has great potential on utilizing the network while reducing the server loads. Video on Demand (VoD) has become widely used since we can watch contents we like without having to download the overall file first. The mobile users may not need high quality of video; they only need good enough quality that can be played in the limited resource of physical device and network. So does with the devices with very limited network bandwidth. These issues emerge an idea of allowing Free-Rider in the P2P VoD system, where those low performance devices will only optimize the network utilization, affecting none to the performance of main system.

Increasing use of embedded systems has made many improvements on hardware development for specific purpose. Hardware changes are more expensive and harder to implement rather than software changes. Developers need tools to do design and testing of new hardware. Many simulation tools have been made to mimic the hardware and allow developer to test programs on top of new hardware. Virtual Development Environment for Embedded Software (VDEES) is one of the alternatives available. It provides an open source based platform and an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that can be used to build and testing newly made component, faster and at lowcost.
Supporting Java Components in the SID Simulation System

Embedded products are becoming richer in features. Simulation tools facilitate low-costs and the efficient development of embedded systems. SID is an open source simulation software that includes a library of components for modeling hardware and software components. SID components were originally written using C/C++ and Tcl/Tk. Tcl/Tk has mainly been used for GUI simulation in the SID system. However, Tcl/Tk components are hampered by low performance, and GUI development using Tcl/Tk also has poor flexibility. Therefore, it would be desirable to use a more advanced programming language, such as Java, to provide simulations of cutting-edge products with rich graphics. Here, we describe the development of the Java Bridge Module as a middleware that will enable the use of Java Components in SID. We also extended the low-level SID API to Java. In addition, we have added classes that contain default implementations of the API. These classes are intended to ensure the compatibility and simplicity of SID components in Java.

Embedded system developers use design and testing tools to make their product faster. Previously [1, 3] developed a virtual development environment for embedded software (VDEES) using open source software, mainly the SID simulation framework for a simulator engine and the Eclipse platform for a development platform. VDEES enables developers to develop SID Component in C++. A bridge module for developing SID Component in Java has been developed and available [2]. However, using this module, developers have to build their SID Java component from scratch. In this work, we developed SID Java Component Builder Plug-in as an additional features to VDEES. This tools enables developers to build SID Component in Java faster and easier.
