      • Introductory classes for newcomer primary school students in Sweden: Pedagogical principles and emotional understanding

Hedman Christina,Magnusson Ulrika 한국다문화교육학회 2021 Multicultural Education Review Vol.13 No.1

Through the study of pedagogic discourse and practice in introductory classes (ICs) aimed at new migrant students at a linguistically diverse primary school in Sweden, we discuss pedagogic principles and power dynamics, drawing on Bernstein’s conceptual frame. Our ethnographic data consist of teacher interviews and observational fieldnotes. A compound set of pedagogic principles was found, where the acknowledgement of the students’ prior languages differs from previous research. Furthermore, the teachers’ accommodations to the students’ needs through a collaborative practice of care formed an important part of the inner logic of discourse and practice. We find this multilingual and emotional support to be contingent upon the IC teachers’ multilingual competencies and long-term experience with ICs, multilingualism and migration, and support from school management. We welcome interrelated discussions of underpinning logics based on research within different educational contexts comprising migrant students.

      • Development of Industry-Wide IS Integration Model in the Agri-Industry

Hedman, Jonas,Henningsson, Stefan Korean Society of Food and Agricultural Informatio 2013 Agribusiness and Information Management Vol.5 No.1

This paper presents a model explaining industrywide information systems (IS) integration in the agri-industry. Using a theoretical frame of value configuration analysis and IS integration extent we study 15 organizations. We find that product sensitivity, continuous production, value chain captains, and value creation logic explain the industry-wide IS integration. Incompatible value creation logic among stakeholders and the lack of presence of "value chain captains" - powerful actors dominating the entire industry - has and negative impact on industry-wide integration. On the other hand, product sensitivity and continuous production process led to higher levels of integration.

Intrathecal Baclofen Dosage for Long-Term Treatment of Patients With Spasticity Due to Traumatic Spinal Cord Injuries or Multiple Sclerosis

Bengt Skoog,Björn Hedman 대한재활의학회 2019 Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine Vol.43 No.5

Objective To investigate dosage changes in intrathecal baclofen during long-term treatment of patients with severe leg spasticity. Methods We performed a retrospective chart review of 49 patients treated with an intrathecal baclofen pump (ITB) because of severe leg spasticity, for a minimum of 7 years. Eight patients were excluded due to catheter/pump failure or factors aggravating spasticity. Of the remaining 41 patients, 19 had spinal cord injury (SCI) and 22 were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Among the SCI patients, 15 had cervical and 4 thoracic SCI, with 7 patients showing the American Spinal Injury Association impairment scale (AIS) A and 12 patients with AIS B–D. The dose was regulated by discussion among the patients and their physicians, usually 4–10 times annually, to reduce leg spasticity and also avoid leg/trunk weakness. Results After 1 year patients on ITB needed a median dose of 168 mg/24 hr (range, 30–725 mg) for an optimal effect. After 7 to 10 years the dosage needed to reduce leg spasticity in the MS patients was significantly increased compared with the initial dose (mean 157%, n=22 and mean 194%, n=18). In contrast, the SCI patients needed only a modest increase (mean 113% and 121%). The difference between MS and SCI patients was significant (t-test p=0.006 and p=0.004). Conclusion The increased dosage in MS patients compared with patients diagnosed with SCI probably reflects the progressive disease course. The need for a large dosage increase in patients with SCI suggests possible pump failure, triggering factors for spasticity or progressive spinal disease.

Structure and reactivity of a mononuclear non-haem iron(III)??peroxo complex

        Cho, Jaeheung,Jeon, Sujin,Wilson, Samuel A.,Liu, Lei V.,Kang, Eun A.,Braymer, Joseph J.,Lim, Mi Hee,Hedman, Britt,Hodgson, Keith O.,Valentine, Joan Selverstone,Solomon, Edward I.,Nam, Wonwoo Nature Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan P 2011 Nature Vol.478 No.7370

Oxygen-containing mononuclear iron species??iron(iii)??peroxo, iron(iii)??hydroperoxo and iron(iv)??oxo??are key intermediates in the catalytic activation of dioxygen by iron-containing metalloenzymes. It has been difficult to generate synthetic analogues of these three active iron??oxygen species in identical host complexes, which is necessary to elucidate changes to the structure of the iron centre during catalysis and the factors that control their chemical reactivities with substrates. Here we report the high-resolution crystal structure of a mononuclear non-haem side-on iron(iii)??peroxo complex, [Fe(iii)(TMC)(OO)]+. We also report a series of chemical reactions in which this iron(iii)??peroxo complex is cleanly converted to the iron(iii)??hydroperoxo complex, [Fe(iii)(TMC)(OOH)]2+, via a short-lived intermediate on protonation. This iron(iii)??hydroperoxo complex then cleanly converts to the ferryl complex, [Fe(iv)(TMC)(O)]2+, via homolytic O??O bond cleavage of the iron(iii)??hydroperoxo species. All three of these iron species??the three most biologically relevant iron??oxygen intermediates??have been spectroscopically characterized; we note that they have been obtained using a simple macrocyclic ligand. We have performed relative reactivity studies on these three iron species which reveal that the iron(iii)??hydroperoxo complex is the most reactive of the three in the deformylation of aldehydes and that it has a similar reactivity to the iron(iv)??oxo complex in C??H bond activation of alkylaromatics. These reactivity results demonstrate that iron(iii)??hydroperoxo species are viable oxidants in both nucleophilic and electrophilic reactions by iron-containing enzymes.

      • A mononuclear nonheme {FeNO} 6 complex: synthesis and structural and spectroscopic characterization

        Hong, Seungwoo,Yan, James J.,Karmalkar, Deepika G.,Sutherlin, Kyle D.,Kim, Jin,Lee, Yong-Min,Goo, Yire,Mascharak, Pradip K.,Hedman, Britt,Hodgson, Keith O.,Karlin, Kenneth D.,Solomon, Edward I.,Nam, W Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 Chemical science Vol.9 No.34

<▼1><P>X-ray structures of nonheme {FeNO}6 and iron(<SMALL>III</SMALL>)-nitrito complexes bearing a tetraamido macrocyclic ligand are reported along with three different generation pathways.</P></▼1><▼2><P>While the synthesis and characterization of {FeNO}7,8,9 complexes have been well documented in heme and nonheme iron models, {FeNO}6 complexes have been less clearly understood. Herein, we report the synthesis and structural and spectroscopic characterization of mononuclear nonheme {FeNO}6 and iron(<SMALL>III</SMALL>)–nitrito complexes bearing a tetraamido macrocyclic ligand (TAML), such as [(TAML)FeIII(NO)]– and [(TAML)FeIII(NO2)]2–, respectively. First, direct addition of NO(g) to [FeIII(TAML)]– results in the formation of [(TAML)FeIII(NO)]–, which is sensitive to moisture and air. The spectroscopic data of [(TAML)FeIII(NO)]–, such as 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray absorption spectroscopies, combined with computational study suggest the neutral nature of nitric oxide with a diamagnetic Fe center (<I>S</I> = 0). We also provide alternative pathways for the generation of [(TAML)FeIII(NO)]–, such as the iron–nitrite reduction triggered by protonation in the presence of ferrocene, which acts as an electron donor, and the photochemical iron–nitrite reduction. To the best of our knowledge, the present study reports the first photochemical nitrite reduction in nonheme iron models.</P></▼2>
