Vol.37 No.-
Objectivism and Interactionism in Computing or Lifting the Spell of Science
1998 Asian Women Vol.7 No.-
In this paper I examine the influence of traditional science on computing. Using the work of Evelyn Fox Keller and others I look first at the sexual metaphors in Platonic science, the experimental science of Francis Bacon and other Western seventeenth century philosophies. I then look at other factors such as the role of witchcraft and objectivity and the way these affect our view of science, scientists and gender today. The second part of the paper asks why computer scientists call computing a 'science' and branches of it 'engineering' and examines how the development of computing has been influenced by the scientific method particularly with respect to a class of beliefs labeled 'objectivism'. In contrast to this there is the alternative approach labeled 'interactionism' (which is distinct from 'interaction' as in the context of 'interactive computer systems') already in se to some extent and which might, if used more widely, lead to a more accessible and democratic computing. The subtitle of this paper requires some explanation. The thesis I present is that science, whatever its form: Platonic, magical or Baconian, has consistently used metaphors and other devices to maintain men in a superior position to women. There is I believe no good, or intrinsic, reason for calling computing a science. By adopting this arbitrary label, computing has acquired the attributes and thus the power and status of a science. The metaphor in this subtitle suggests that a spell has been cast over computing making it seem to be a science, when it is not. Spells in English fairy tales can be good or bad. A fairy casts a spell which is probably a good spell and if a witch casts a spell it is assumed to be bad. Whether or not we are talking about a good or bad spell is not something I wish to go into at this point. In the language of fairy tales spells can be 'lifted' which means that the magical influence is removed and is no longer effective.
