Simultaneousness of Reproductive Organs of Sour Cherry Cultivars Adaptable to Climatic Condition of Iran

        Gholamhossein Davarynejad,Mahmood Ansari,J?zsef Ny?ki,Zolt?n Szab? 한국원예학회 2010 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.51 No.1

Simultaneousness of pollen shedding and stigma viability ratio was examined to clarify the phenology of reproductive organs of nine economically important sour cherry (Prunus cerasus) cultivars of ‘?rdi b?term?’, ‘Debreceni b?term?’, ‘Cseng?di’, ‘K?ntorj?nosi 3’, ‘?jfeh?rt?i f?rt?s’, ‘Petri’, ‘Eva’, ‘Oblascinszka’, and ‘P?ndy 279’. The main aim was investigating the possible influence of environmental cues in timing and development of phenophases and also response of different cultivars to seasonal cues. Likely effects of climatic changes on phenological development patterns were also considered. Results showed important aspects of the reproductive biology of sour cherry flowers. The amplitude of the phenophase ‘beginning of blossoming’ between cultivars did not exceed 6 days. There is a maximum of 3 days difference in the blooming length of different directions in each cultivar. ‘P?ndy 279’ showed high variability when the position of flowers changed on the tree shoots. ‘?jfeh?rt?i f?rt?s’ was stable in all four directions of the tree. The pollen shedding period and stigma viability ratio were synchronous. Pollen shedding phenomenon simultaneously occurred with the secretary activities of stigmas in all examined cultivars. Distribution of pollen shedding over the secretary activity of stigmas is almost good. In all five cultivars, maximum pollen shedding occurred when the temperature was high during the day. In general, the results of this experiment and our previous studies clearly demonstrate that the P?ndy groups cannot be recommended for plantation in new orchards of Iran.

Evaluation of Susceptibility of Walnut Genotypes to Sudden Cold and Frost Injury

        Gholamhossein Davarynejad,Zeinab Aryanpooya,Ahmad Fahadan,Ehsan Davarynejad 한국원예학회 2009 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.50 No.6

Cold hardiness is a key factor limiting the distribution and productivity of perennial horticultural plants in the temperate regions of both hemispheres. Frequent frosts occurring during winter and spring in Khorasan, Iran cause serious damage to apricot, peach, nectarine, fig, olive, pomegranate, and walnut which necessitate the selection of resistant cultivars. Before introducing new genotypes, their capacity for adaptation to different conditions needs to be studied. Walnut production in Khorasan has been increasing through area expansion and the introduction of new genotypes. In this area, affective freeze occasionally damages walnut tree. The minimum temperature on winter of 2008 was about -22℃. The objective of this study was to evaluate cold hardiness in 12 walnut genotypes (K21B5/13, K21B5/15, K21B6/17, K21B6/18, K28B2/5, K28B2/6, K23B5/13, K23B5/14, K21B3/8, K21B9/25, K28B3/8, and K21B1/3) which were planted in 1986 on seedlings at the genotype collection (36° 17′ N and 59° 36′ E and 1,012 m altitude) of Khorasan Agricultural and Natural Sources Researches Center, Mashhad, Iran. The ionic leakages were evaluated at the Department of Horticulture at Ferdowsi University in Mashhad, Iran. One- and 2-year-old shoots of about 30 cm long were randomly collected on February, 2008 from mature trees. K21B5/13, K21B5/15, K21B6/18, K21B3/8, and K28B3/8 genotypes had more damage than the other genotypes, but K23B5/13, K23B5/14, and especially K21B9/25 showed resistance to -22℃. Linear correlation between ionic leakage and visual observation was found. Minimum ionic leakage was observed in K21B9/25 and visual observation confirmed its cold hardiness. Flower buds in K21B5/15 and vegetative buds in K21B3/8 were damaged completely. Sexual buds were the most sensitive organs of the tree. Annual shoots were damaged more severely than biennial shoots.

Antioxidant Capacity, Chemical Composition and Physical Properties of Some Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) Cultivars

        Gholamhossein Davarynejad,Shadan Khorshidi,J?zsef Ny?ki,Zolt?n Szab?,Judit Gal-Remennyik 한국원예학회 2010 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.51 No.6

The study was undertaken to elucidate the understanding of biochemical and physical properties of nine fresh and dried apricot cultivars (‘Jumbo cot’, ‘Tom cot’, ‘Goldstrike’, ‘Goldbar’, ‘Bergeron’, ‘Bergarouge’, ‘Sweet cot’, ‘Yellow cot’ and ‘Zebra’) cultivated at the Boldogk?v?ralja Commercial Orchard of Debrecen, Hungary. Flesh firmness, skin color, total soluble solid content, titratable acidity, and antioxidant capacity were measured by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method and chemiluminescence assay. Fruits were harvested at commercial maturity stages. Fresh apricot and the stoned, non sulphurated fruits dried with hot air for 24 hours were used for measuring antioxidant activity. The contents of antioxidant compounds were analyzed according to a factorial experiment with completely randomized design. All measured characteristics were significantly different among cultivars. ‘Goldbar’ had the highest lipophilic antioxidant capacity (ACL), hydrophilic antioxidant capacity (ACW) and FRAP value. Drying changed the correlation between assays.

Effect of Modified Atmosphere Packaging on Chemical Composition, Antioxidant Activity, Anthocyanin, and Total Phenolic Content of Cherry Fruits

        Shadan Khorshidi,Gholamhossein Davarynejad,Ali Tehranifar,Esmaeil Fallahi 한국원예학회 2011 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.52 No.5

The trend of postharvest changes in sweet cherry (Prunus avium) cv. Siah-e Mashhad, sour cherry (Prunus cerasus)cv. Érdi Bőtermő and Iranian local cultivar named Albaloo Mohallai were investigated. The traits were recorded included antioxidant activity, total anthocyanin and phenolic content, flesh firmness, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids concentration (SSC), Juice pH, SSC/TA ratio and percentage of weight loss. They were evaluated at harvest after 15, 30, 45 and 60 days of storage in packages with modified atmosphere (MAP) and regular atmosphere (RAP) (control) and refrigerated at 0± 1℃. The results showed that the fruits packed in modified atmosphere had better quality than the ones packed in air due to higher SSC, TA, firmness, and lower pH, SSC/TA ratio and weight loss. All quality attributes diminished with storage time, while fruit firmness did not exhibit any particular trend during storage. The trends of total anthocyanin, phenolic content, and antioxidant activity during storage varied, depending on the cherry type. The negative correlation between antioxidant activity and fruit deformation (r from -0.49 to -0.72) was found.
