Vol.14 No.1
Witold Lutoslawski의 "Paroles tissees"
Vol.1 No.-
Born in Poland, Witold Lutoslawski is an eminent composer of the twentieth-century modern. In his Serial Period subsequent to Folk-music Period, Lutoslwski happened to learn the mechanically oriented quality of Twelve-tone technique. Coming across John Cage's Chance Music, he was fascinated by the notion of Music Left to chance and, from there, went on writing his unique Aleatory Music. Aleatory music differs greatly from Chance music. Chance music is written in a free condition since the composer does not note down his/her thoughts on a score. But Aleatory music is written with a deliberate plan made on a score, the composer being allowed to add his/her inspiration to some extent. One of the works from his third Aleatory music Period. Lutoslawski's "Paroles Tissees" presents his unique musical world by reasonably combining the following four prinsciples: the repetition of fragments (twelve tones here being treated as units of colored blocks of sound), chromatic scale, aleatory counterpoint, and microrhythm.
