Does Exchange Rate Volatility Dampen Imports? Commodity-Level Evidence From India

Chandan Sharma,Debdatta Pal 한국국제경제학회 2019 International Economic Journal Vol.33 No.4

This paper studies the effect of exchange rates’ volatility on India’s imports on a balanced panel of 73 commodities spanned from April 2013 to October 2016. Rather than using cross-country bilateral import flows, we test the relationship at the commodity level using disaggregated trade data with monthly frequency. Generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model is used for estimating exchange rate. We employ pooled mean group estimator for simultaneously assessing long- and short-run association between nominal exchange rate volatility and import volume. In the long-run, for all commodities, a 100% increase in volatility results in a 12% drop in India’s imports. A significant dampening impact of volatility of exchange rate on imports is evidenced also in short-run. However, at the disaggregate level, imports in the agricultural and allied sector are found to be relatively more sensitive to exchange rate volatility as compared to the manufacturing sector. We also conducted a time series analysis for the aggregate data covering both pre- and postcrisis period. The results validate the findings of commodities-level panel data analysis. This paper concludes with policy implications of our findings.

Exploring the strategic role of Marketer-Generated-Content analytics towards Airbnb hosts sales optimization

        Chattopadhyay Manojit,Pal Debdatta 한국마케팅과학회 2024 마케팅과학연구 Vol.34 No.2

Although user-generated content is reported to improve Airbnb host’s sales, the impact of Marketer-Generated Content (MGC) on the minimum sales generated from the reviewers who have reviewed the MGC is yet to be explored. This study examines MGC of title descriptions analysis from the City of Los Angeles listing data to understand their importance in predicting hosts’ net sales. The analysis employs two complementary econometric approaches: parametric multiple regression and the nonparametric multivariate adaptive regression spline model across three neighbourhood groups and two price groups. The findings indicate hosts can employ MGC to optimize sales and should highlight feature words in the title that best reflect the property characteristics and appeal to a target group that may be locationspecific, price-sensitive, or both. The title should be informative and detailed within a limit of 10 words. The novelty of the work is to identify the influence of total sales for respective feature words from the title description of Airbnb property and to analyze their uses in marketing communications. The practical implications indicate that host-generated feature words are crucial in maximizing net sales for the property.
