Performance Analysis of IR-UWB Receivers in Indoor Multipath Channels

Appealing features such as flexibility, robustness, and high-precision ranging capability have made a pulsebased Ultra-Wideband (UWB) system an excellent candidate for a variety of applications. This paper presents the analysis results of Bit Error Rate (BER) performance with respect to the size and position of an integration window in a UWB receiver. By comparing the results, the best operating condition of the window in a receiver is derived. Two spreading schemes which are Time-Hopping (TH) and Direct-Sequence (DS) are considered and spread data are modulated using Pulse Position Modulation (PPM). Generated signal goes through indoor multipath channel with AWGN. A receiver recovers source data from the incoming signal using energy-detection scheme. Simulation results show BER gets optimized when the integration window is perfectly synchronized with the incoming pulse and the window size is about 5 times larger than the pulse width.
