Based on an approach proposed to calculate the direct reaction (DR) and fusion probabilities for heavy ion collisions, simultaneous x -analy- ses are performed of data of the elastic scattering, DR and fusion cross sections for the 6He+209B1 system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies, determining parameters of the polarization potential, consisting of DR and fusion parts. We show that the data are well reproduced by the potential that satisfies the dispersion relation. A Discussion is also given of nature of the threshold anomaly of the extracted potential.

An approach is proposed to calculate the direct reaction (DR) and fusion probabilities for heavy ion collisions at near-Coulomb-barrier energies as functions of the distance of closest approach D within the framework of the optical model that introduces two types of imaginary potentials, DR and fusion. The probabilities are calculated by using par- tial DR and fusion cross sections, together with the classical relations associated with the Coulomb trajectory. Such an approach makes it pos- sible to analyze the data for angular distributions of the inclusive DR cross section, facilitating the determination of the radius parameters of the imaginary DR potential in a less ambiguous manner. Simultaneous X²-analyses are performed of relevant data for the 160+208Pb system near the Coulomb-barrier energy.

This study was compared and analyzed the differences in the academic achievement of the students of the Department of Ophthalmic Optics, who were classified according to method of admission selection, origin. ages, participation levels in the events held by the department, and gender, in the first semesters of the years 2002 to 2004. This study was aimed to find out if these factors affected the academic achievement of the students. The standard GPA was set at 4.5 and the students whose records show a grade of F in all subjects, or those who were regarded as not having had the intention to complete the semesters under study were not included among the subjects of the study,According to the method of admission selection. those students who enrolled in the department through college or higher degrees course graduate selection processes had the most superior academic records while those students selected, through a special selection process, from agriculture and fisheries communities showed the worst academic records. According to origin, those students from Gyeongsangnam-do achieved the most superior academic records while those students from hoongcheongbuk-do showed the worst academic records. This, howev-er. excluded those regions from which less than 5% of the students came According to ages, 30-34 year-old students showed the best academic results, and the students under the age of 23 showed the least impres-sive scholastic achievement. According to participation levels in the events held by the department, no significant difference in scholastic achievement was observed. According to gender, the academic records of the female students were superior to those of the male students, but the differences were relatively small.

The purpose of this study was to determine repeatability of measure- ments of interpupillary distance. We measured far interpupillary distance and near interpupillary dis- tance at fixation distance of 40cm with a millimeter ruler and Shinnippon PD-82 corneal reflection pupillometer. The difference of measurements of IPD by a pupillometer and a ruler is little, and reproducibility by a pupillometer is better than by a ruler.

In a previous search for the differentially expressed genes in keratinocyte differentiation, we identified neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) as a calcium-induced gene. In this study, we further verified the expression of NGAL in cultured keratinocytes as well as in several skin diseases. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Western blot, and ELISA clearly showed that NGAL expression was markedly increased in calcium-induced keratinocyte differentiation in vitro. However, in our previous report, NGAL expression was not detected in normal skin tissue except for hair follicle by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, indicating the difference of cell status between in vitro and in vitro conditions. Interestingly, NGAL expression was highly increased in psoriasis-like inflammatory disorders (lichen planus and pityriasis rubura pilaris) and skin cancers (keratoacanthoma and squamous cell carcinoma), implying that NGAL may be related with the epidermal hyperplasia. Collectively, these results reveal the potential importance of NGAL in the maintenance of skin homeostasis.

Abstract

Nitric oxide (NO), which is produced by endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), is an important protective molecule in the vasculature. However, eNOS coupling and its resultant activation are altered under oxidative stress. Under these conditions, eNOS uses molecular oxygen as a substrate instead of L-arginine, resulting in the production of superoxide anion radicals ( O 2 - ) rather than NO. We explored the effects of mulberry extract and its components on eNOS uncoupling induced by oxidized low-density lipoprotein in HUVECs and investigated the potential molecular mechanism. Ox-LDL significantly increased O 2 - production and reduced NO release from HUVECs. Pretreatment of cells with mulberry extract and its main components significantly inhibited ox-LDL-induced O 2 - generation, preserving NO level. Mulberry extract also prevented ox-LDL-induced reduction in phospho-eNOS Thr495. These regulatory effects were related to phosphorylation of eNOS Thr495. Mulberry extract and its components can potentially be used to treat ox-LDL-related vascular endothelial dysfunction.

Highlights

Mulberry extract and its components have significant antioxidant activity.

Mulberry extract and its components regulate eNOS uncoupling.

Mulberry extract and its components regulate NO production.

Mulberry extract has the potential to treat vascular endothelial dysfunction.

In our previous studies (Chae et al., 1990; Chae et ol., 1993), we found that a phytochrome signal was clearly connected with the change in cytosolic free Ca^(2+) concentrntion ([Ca^(2+)]_i) in oat cells. It was determined that the [Ca^(2+)]_i change occured both by mobilization out of the intracellular Ca^(2+) store and by influx from the medium. The specific aim of this work is to elucidate the processes connecting Ca^(2+) mobilization and influx. The cells treated with thapsigargin (increasing [Ca^(2+)]_i by inhibition of the Ca^(2+)-ATPase in the calcium pool) in the presence of external Ca^(2+) showed the same increasing pattern (sustained increasing shape) of [Ca^(2+)]_i as that measured in animal cells. Red light irradiation after thapsigargin treatment did not increase [Ca^(2+)]_i. These results suggest that thapsigargin also acts specifically in the processes of mobilization and influx of Ca^(2+) in oat cells. When the cells were treated with TEA (K^+ channel blocker), changes in [Ca^(2+)]_i were drastically reduced in comparison with that measured in the absence of TEA. The results suggest that the change in [Ca^(2+)]_i due to red light irradiation is somehow related with K^+ channel opening to change membrane potential. The membrane potential change due to K^+ influx might be the critical factor in opening a voltage-dependent calcium channel for Ca^(2+) influx.

Serotonin (5-HT) plays a critical role in modulating synaptic plasticity in the marine mollusc Aplysia and in the mammalian nervous system. In Aplysia sensory neurons, 5-HT can activate several signal cascades, including PKA and PKC, presumably via distinct types of G protein-coupled receptors. However, the molecular identities of these receptors have not yet been identified. We here report the cloning and functional characterization of a 5-HT receptor that is positively coupled to adenylyl cyclase in Aplysia neurons. The cloned receptor, 5-HT(apAC1), stimulates the production of cAMP in HEK293T cells and in Xenopus oocytes. Moreover, the knockdown of 5-HT(apAC1) expression by RNA interference blocked 5-HT-induced cAMP production in Aplysia sensory neurons and blocked synaptic facilitation in nondepressed or partially depressed sensory-to-motor neuron synapses. These data implicate 5-HT(apAC1) as a major modulator of learning related synaptic facilitation in the direct sensory to motor neuron pathway of the gill withdrawal reflex.
