        Video Game Play and Television Viewing as Predictors of Aggression in Preadolescent Boys: A Comparative Analysis

        This study examined the hypotheses that video game play would be a significant predictor of aggressive behavior in boys, and that video game play would account for more variance in aggression than television viewing. One hundred and fifty-two boys ages 10-13 responded to a questionnaire containing the Olweus Aggression Inventory and items pertaining to weekly video game playing and television viewing habits. Cooperating classroom teachers also provided behavioral ratings on verbal and physical aggression. Results revealed that time spent playing video games was a significant predictor of higher levels of aggression according to teacher ratings and self-reports of aggression. Video game play also accounted for significantly more variance in the measures of aggressive behavior than television viewing.
