      • Reliability analysis of 3D pelvic motion measurement system using an IMU sensor and mobile application

        Yoon Hyuk Kim(김윤혁),Ruoyu Wei(위약우),Bayasgalan Davaasambuu(바이상갈란 다바삼부) 대한인간공학회 2021 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.11

Objective: The aim of present study was to develop an IMU-based three-dimension (3D) pelvic motion measurement system that can work on Android tablet devices. Background: Every country is experiencing the aging population and increasing number of patients suffering from the joint diseases. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis (OA), and total hip arthroplasty (THA) is recognized as reliable surgery with the high satisfaction and relative success rate. Even though, the failure rate of total hip arthroplasty surgeries is up to 10% following primary surgery and 28% after revision arthroplasty. Method: In order to achieve the higher accuracy, anterior pelvic plane (APP) can be used as an anatomical reference for the navigation system during THA. The anterior pelvic plane was defined as the plane formed by the bilateral anterior superior iliac spines and the upper margin of the pubic symphystic. The previous methods such as EOS imaging, computed tomography (CT) can only provide the static pelvic models. Ten male volunteers participated in the validation experiment using the 10 sets of left side sagittal and posterior x-ray images. Results: The result shows the APP orientation mean error showed between 1.56 degrees to 0.05 degrees. The inter-variability and intra-variability among 10 subjects were maximally within 2-3 degrees which is acceptable in clinical application. Conclusion: We demonstrated that our device can be used as a pelvic orientation system for patients and surgeons in the clinical environment. Application: The developed technology and mobile app can be utilized in orthopaedic joint surgical planning and evaluation of post-surgical outcomes.
