Status of Radiation Dose and Radioactive Contamination due to the Fukushima Accident
Baba, Mamoru The Korean Association for Radiation Protection 2016 방사선방어학회지 Vol.41 No.2
Backgrounds: The accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), March 2011, caused serious radioactive contamination over wide area in east Japan. Therefore, it is important to know the effect of the accident and the status of NPP. Materials and Methods: This paper provides a review on the status of radiation dose and radioactive contamination caused by the accident on the basis of publicized information. Results and Discussion: Monitoring of radiation dose and exposure dose of residents has been conducted extensively by the governments and various organizations. The effective dose of general residents due to the accident proved to be less than a mSv both for external and internal dose. The equivalent committed dose of thyroid was evaluated to be a few mSv in mean value and less than 50 mSv even for children. Monitoring of radioactivity concentration has been carried out on food ingredients, milk and tap water, and actual meal. These studies indicated the percentage of foods above the regulation standard was over 10% in 2011 but decreasing steadily with time. The internal dose due to foods proved to be tens of ${\mu}Sv$ and much less than that due to natural $^{40}K$ even in the Fukushima area and decreasing steadily, although high level concentration is still observed in wild plants, wild mushrooms, animals and some kind of fishes. Conclusion: According to extensive studies, not only the effect of the accident but also the pathway and countermeasures against radioactive contamination have been revealed, and they are applied very effectively for restoration of environment and reconstruction of the area.
NEUTRON ELASTIC AND NON-ELASTIC SCATTERING STUDIES IN TENS OF MeV REGION
Mamoru, Baba,Masanobu Ibaraki,Takako, Miura,Takao, Aoki,Hiroshi, Nakashima,Shin-ichiro, Meigo Susumu Tanaka 대한방사선 방어학회 2001 방사선방어학회지 Vol.26 No.3
Experimental data have been obtained on the neutron elastic scattering cross sections for 55, 65 and 75 MeV neutrons, and non-elastic scattering cross sections for 40 to 80 MeV neutrons using the 7Li(p,n) neutron source at TIARA of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and the TOF method. Data were obtained for C, Si, Fe, Zr, and Pb of natural elements. Elastic scattering data were obtained for 25 laboratory angles between 2.6 and 53.0 that clarified the angular distributions and angle integrated values. The data obtained were compared favorabley with recent LA150 data library.

A brief review is presented on the ion beam application in science and technology. ion beams are used very effectively in various fields of science and technology, on the basis of advance in accelerator technology and experimental techniques for ion beam utilization. Recent progress in this field is reviewed in terms of the direct ion beam utilization like ion beam analysis, and the utilization of neutrons as secondary particles.

DEVELOPMENT OF POSITION-SENSITIVE PROTON RECOIL TELESCOPE (PSPRT)
Miura, Takako,Baba, Mamoru,Kawata, Naoki,Sanami, Toshiya 대한방사선 방어학회 2001 방사선방어학회지 Vol.26 No.3
We have developed a position-sensitive proton recoil telescope(PSPRT) which employs a position-sensitive photomultiplier (PS-PMT) and a scintillator for both a radiator and a proton-detector. This system is expected to achieve high energy resolution under a large solid angle, because it enables to obtain the information not only on the proton energy but also the recoil angle from the position data for both detectors. The response of the PSPRT for 14.1 MeV mono-energetic neutrons was measured, and the PSPRT proved to be operating as expected.

Purpose: We investigated the effects of breast-feeding and supplementary-feeding on jejunal villi morphology and jejunal absorptive capacity at the early neonatal stage. Methods: Newborn Wistar rats were separated from their mothers immediately after birth and allocated to a breast-fed, mixed-fed (breast-feeding and formula-feeding), or formula-fed group. Rats were fed accordingly for 3 days. We then investigated the morphology of jejunal villi and the mechanism of macromolecular uptake by absorptive cells in each group. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used as a representative macromolecule. Results: After three days of feeding, jejunal villi of breast-fed rats were longest, followed by the mixed-fed, and then formula-fed groups. Additionally, HRP underwent transcytosis from the apical membrane to the basolateral membrane of absorptive cells in the breast-fed group. HRP did not undergo transcytosis in either the formula-fed or mixed-fed rat jejuna. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that supplementary feeding affects normal villus development and impairs endocytosis and transcytosis in early neonatal stage jejunal absorptive cells.

We have measured energy angular distribution of secondary neutrons for 1) ^7Li(p,xn) and ^9Be(p,xn) reactions with thin targets at 70 MeV, 2)^9Be(p,xn) reactions with a thick target at 11 MeV, using the time-of-flight technique at Tohoku University Cyclotron facility. Data were obtained at several laboratory angles from 0° to 110° using a beam swinger system and an NE213 scintillation detector placed at a well collimated neutron flight path. The energy range was from maximum to ~4 MeV (at 70 MeV). The spectrum results at 70 MeV showed very strong angular dependence which should be considered in detail in the applied purposes, while the data at 11 MeV showed much milder dependence and in fair agreement with the prediction of MCNPX.
