The study was to experimentally investigate how the shock wave production was related to the thickness of the metallic and insulating membranes encompassing the solenoid of a cylindrical electromagnetic shock wave transducer. The thicknesses considered were 30, 50, 100, 150, and 200 μm in the metallic foil, and 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, and 500 μm in the insulator. Total 30 shock wave transducers covering all the thickness combinations of the pair of membranes were constructed and tested. The results showed that the shock wave production was maximized at a particular thickness of 50 μm of the metallic foil and when the insulator was as thin as possible. The conditions were the inductance of the shock wave transducer being close to the lower bound of its minimum and the current flow through the transducer being slightly smaller than its maximum.
