The Evaluation of Medium Voltage Motor's Current and Voltage Harmonics during Loading

Alboyaci, Bora,Yorukeren, Nuran The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2007 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.2 No.1

This paper presents the results of investigating harmonic levels on medium voltage motors at loading conditions in air separation plant. The essential results of the measurements of the medium voltage motor harmonics are summarized in the values for the total harmonic distortion (THD). Motors loading case is used to assess the current and voltage harmonic distortions. Proper system analysis is important when adding a new motor starting and controlling the equipment. With the result of the paper it is possible to suggest the most appropriate starting and control method. Two medium voltage motors of air separation unit measurement results and simulations are summarized. Both current and voltage harmonic distortions are fitted by using a linear and exponential regression model. The prediction of THD values can be used for this kind of process for future planning by utilities.

A New method for the Calculation of Leakage Reactance in Power Transformers

Dawood, Kamran,Alboyaci, Bora,Cinar, Mehmet Aytac,Sonmez, Olus The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2017 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.12 No.5

Transformers are one of the most precious elements of the electric power system. Stability and reliability of the electric power network mainly depend on the working of the transformer. Leakage reactance of the transformer is one of the important factors and accurate calculation of the leakage reactance is necessary for the transformer designers and electric distributors. Leakage reactance of the transformer depends on the geometry of the transformer. There are many different methods for the calculations of the leakage reactance however mostly are usable when the axial heights of the high voltage and low voltage windings are equal. When the axial heights of high voltage and low voltage windings are asymmetric most of the analytical methods are not reliable. In this study, a new analytical method is introduced for the calculation of the leakage reactance. Fourteen different transformers are investigated in this study and four of them are presented in this paper. The results of the new analytical method are compared with the experimental results. Other analytical and numerical methods are also compared with this new method. Results show that this method is more reliable and accurate as compared to the other analytical methods. The maximum relative error between short-circuit test and proposed method for these fourteen transformers was less than 2.8%.

Comparison of Power Loss and Magnetic Flux Distribution in Octagonal Wound Transformer Core Configurations

Mehmet Aytac Cinar,Bora Alboyaci,Mehlika Sengul 대한전기학회 2014 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.9 No.4

In this paper, various configurations of octagonal wound transformer core topology, which has previously proved advantages on conventional wound cores, are studied. Each configuration has different joint types and different placement of joint zones on the core. Magnetic flux distributions and power losses of each configuration are analyzed and compared. Comparisons are based on both 2D&3D finite element simulations and experimental studies. The results show that, joint types and their placements on the core cause local flux accumulations and dramatically affect power loss of the core.
