The effect of DPF characteristics, such as material and cell density, on the internal temperature of DPF during active regeneration was investigated by using DPF test rig. DPF was regenerated by direct fuel injection into the exhaust gas in the upstream of DOC and exhaust gas in front of DPF was heated up to 650℃ by controlling the quantity of injected fuel. Because thermal conductivity of SiC DPF is superior to that of cordierite DPF, radial thermal gradient and maximum DPF temperature of SiC DPF was much lower than those of cordierite DPF during active regeneration in case of the same soot loading and cell density condition. However, the difference of cell density in SiC DPF had little effect on thermal properties during active regeneration. That means that the material of DPF is a key factor to influence thermal properties of DPF during regeneration.

One method of burning soot within DPF is catalytic fuel burner which utilizes catalyst’s hydrocarbon (HC) oxidation performance. In this method, exhaust temperature can be raised the level to more than 600 degree by injecting diesel fuel in front of DOC. Because injected diesel fuel can’t be completely combusted by DOC and unburned HCs are formed during incomplete combustion of diesel fuel, HC concentration behind DOC during diesel fuel dosing tends to increase. Increased HC concentration during diesel fuel injection varies with exhaust temperature and can be reduced by applying catalyzed DPF. So, the effect of PGM loading on DPF and exhaust temperature on HC slip during diesel fuel dosing was experimentally investigated. The results from this study show that higher exhaust temperature and catalyzed DPF can significantly reduce HC slip behind DPF. It is also shown that the key to reduce HC slip is not the quantity of PGM loading but applying PGM loading on DPF.

One method of burning soot within DPF is catalytic fuel burner which utilizes hydrocarbon(HC) oxidation performance by catalyst. In this method, exhaust temperature can be raised the level to more than 500 degree by injecting diesel fuel in front of DOC. Because injected diesel fuel cannot be completely combusted by DOC and unburned HC are formed during incomplete combustion of diesel fuel, HC concentration behind DPF during diesel fuel dosing tends to increase. HC concentration behind DPF can be reduced by applying additional DOC behind DPF. Thermal efficiency of dosing diesel fuel tends to reduce when flow rate increases. NO₂/NOx ratio decreases during fuel dosing because catalyst reaction rate of HC is faster than that of NO. The position of diesel fuel injection is the important factor of thermal efficiency because that can improve the dispersion of diesel fuel in exhaust gas.
