This study was performed to report the effect of oriental medical treatments on the 4 patients with calcific tendinitis of the shoulder. The 4 patients were treated by cupping, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture on tender points of the greater tuberosity of humerus. The state of patients was measured by visual analog scale(VAS) and shoulder range of motion(ROM). After mean 3.25 times of treatments, the significant recovery of shoulder ROM was measured and the significant pain relief was seen as the average of VAS changed from 8.5 to 1. These results suggest that oriental medical treatments including cupping, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture are effective to improve the calcific tendinitis of the shoulder. However more rigorous study should be followed.
Alcoholic polyneuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nervous system that interferes with sensory, motor, and autonomic nerve function. This study was to report the effect of Oriental medical treatment on a patient with alcoholic polyneuropathy. Conservative Oriental medical treatment was done to a man of 84 years who was diagnosed as a alcoholic polyneuropathy and suffered from both distal dominant leg weakness & symmetrical paresthesia and ataxic gait. The changes of symptoms, reflexes and sensory test were checked by Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Scoring System(TCNSS). Reflexes, motor and sensory impairments were improved after the Oriental medical treatment. I reported good effects of Oriental medical treatment on alcoholic polyneuropathy. Oriental medical treatment can be helpful to improve the symptoms of alcoholic polyneuropathy.
Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the effects of Lumbricus extract(LE) on the regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) in ischemic rats, further to determine the mechanism of action of LE, and the effects that LE inhibits lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activity in brain cells. Methods and materials :This study, ischemic rats were divided into total four group: control group(n=6), experimental group Ⅰ(LE treated group)(n=6), experimental group Ⅱ(LE treated group after pretreatment with indomethacin)(n=6), experimental group Ⅲ(LE treated group after pretreatment with methylene blue)(n=6). And the measurement that LE inhibits LDH activity in the damage to brain cells to N-methyl-D-aspartic acid(NMDA). The changes of rCBF were determinated by laser-doppler flowmetry(LDF), and LDH activity was determinated by microplate reader in vitro. Results :1. The rCBF was significantly improved by LE(10 ㎎/㎏, i.p.) during the period of cerebral reperfusion, compared with the control group. 2. The rCBF was significantly increased by LE after pretreatment with indomethacin(1 ㎎/㎏, i.p.), an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, during the period of cerebral reperfusion, compared with the LE group, and rCBF was accelerated by LE after pretreatment with methylene blue(10 ㎍/㎏, i.p.), an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase during the period of cerebral reperfusion, compared with the control group. 3. LE significantly inhibited LDH activity in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusions :From the above results, these were suggested that Lumbricus had anti-ischemia action in connection with cyclooxygenase and might prevent the brain cells death through inhibited LDH activity.
Objectives: The aim was to study the effect of bee venom pharmacopuncture therapy with different concentration on rheumatoid arthritis rat model. Methods: We enforced a bee venom pharmacopuncture therapy with different concentration on rheumatoid arthritis rat model by the intradermal injection of chicken type Ⅱ collagen emulsified. 14 days after the onset of the rheumatoid arthritis rat model, a fixed volume of bee venom was daily injected to ST-35 acupoint in the rat`s knee joint for 2-3 weeks. The hind paw volume, arthritic index, arthritic flexion pain test, pain threshold, and serum analysis(CRP, PGE2, ALT, AST) were analyzed, and the expression profiles of COX-2, c-fos, and substance-P at the dorsal horn region of the spinal cord and subchondral bone of the knee joint were also analyzed by using the immunohistochemistry. Results: After the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis rats with bee venom pharmacopuncture, the paw volume of edema of arthritic rats were almost restored to the level of normal group, and behavior tests were very effective. Also the evaluation on the blood serum analysis was remarkable. COX-2, c-fos, and substance-P positive cells in the immunohistological section of dorsal horn region of the spinal cord and subchondral bone of the knee joints were significantly decreased. also the bee venom pharmacopuncture was effective to alleviate their rheumatoid arthritic inflammation cytokine inhibition as regards to the behavior tests and joint histological appearance. Conclusions: Based on the results in this study, bee venom pharmacopuncture with concentrated treatment condition was very effective in low fixed quantity and progressive low increased quantity.
Hua-Tuo(145-208) created five “WuQinXi”exercise by imitating the movements of a tiger, a deer, a bear, a monkey and a bird. The “WuQinXi”exercise, one of the medical Qi-gongs, is an exercise maximizing human"s self healing power and has been effective significantly at several modern researches. There are many exercise therapies in western medcine, such as Willams's flexion exercise, Mckenzie's extension exercise, vertebral stabilization exercise and so on. However, there isn't a special exercise therapy which can be applied for medical practice in oriental medicine. So We selected some motions from “WuQinXi”exercise, which are suitable for lumbar spinal disease, and analyzed them. After that, We assorted them by kinds of lumbar spinal disease. First, We selected 22 motions which are related with lumbar movements from 3 type “WuQinXi”exercises ; 10 mode, 15 mode, 18 mode. And then, We classified them according to lumbar movements as flexion, extention, lateral bending and rotation, and also functions as stabilization and rubbing. Next, with these classifications, We assorted those motions by kinds of lumbar spinal disease as HIVD(herniation of intervertebral disc), spinal stenosis, spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis, facet joint syndrome, compression fracture and spondylosis. We expect that trying “WuQinXi”exercise at clinic in this way, the particular exercise therapy of oriental medicine, “WuQinXi” exercise will become more popular. And Oriental medical doctors will be able to teach patients “WuQinXi”exercise"s motions easily at clinic, depending on kinds of lumbar spinal disease each patient suffers from. We plan to study more about 20 mode, 30 mode, 40 mode and the effect of “WuQinXi”exercise by comparing patients who do the “WuQinXi”exercise with the patients who do the western medical exercise therapy.

Objective : The purpose of this study is a 47-year-old man who developed a suddenly progressive lumbosacral plexopathy in the lower right extremity. In this case lumbosacral plexopathy followed labour heavy burden, drinking and sleep position. Methods :Clinical Datas were analyzed by elctromyography, L-spine CT and digital infrared themographic Imaging system. Results : Patient`s chief complain is foot drop, leg weakness, sensory change, and numbness in the lower right extremity. Most symptomsdecresed and ROM(range of motion) of the lower right extremity incresed from poor to Good. Conclusions :We experienced improvement of symptoms to this patient by electro-acupuncture stimulation, Infrared, moxa cautery, physicaltherpy, taping therapy, Herbal medication.
