      • Joseph Conrad의 The Secret Agent 硏究

        劉琯鉉 서울産業大學校 1985 논문집 Vol.21 No.1

The Nigger of the "Narcissus"(1898), Load Jim(1900), Youth(1902) 등의 작품에서 볼 수 있는 다채로운 바다와 이국 정취로 인하여, 많은 독자들을 확보하고 있다.

      • Hardy詩와 憐憫의 情

        劉琯鉉 서울産業大學校 1995 논문집 Vol.41 No.1

Compassion is the most strongly felt emotion in Hardy's poetry. His vision is that we live in an imperfect world, entirely dominated by a senseless, impersonal, and amoral Nature. God's intention is not to be found in Nature's scheme and our worst vices can largely be attributed to Nature at work within us. This sympathy for individuals results from the universality of his vision. For us, who live on a blighted world all together, the only hope, forlorn as it is, is that compassion would spread among the peoples and that they would realise that they are all members of one family, one body, one community. The ‘Evolutionary meliorism’he suggests in ‘Apology’depends upon this realisation.

      • Hardy시의 음악성 시비

        유관 명지영어영문학회 1999 명지영어영문학 Vol.4 No.1-2

Since the first appearance of Hardy's Wessex Poems (1898) it has become a common opinion among his readers and critics that his poetry lacks music: his style is rugged and his diction is eccentric. Samuel Hynes defends Hardy's poetry against this critical opinion and suggests that his harsh style is a metaphor for belief. These two opinions, however, are same in that they think Hardy's poetry lacks music in the sense of mellifluousness. P,E, Mitchell, again, refutes this critical view by reference to the tradition of English folk songs and ballads. This article, drawing on Mitchell, concentrates on the common qualities in the folk songs and Hardy's poems and on the significance of Hardy as a poet in the face of the industrial modern urban life.

      • Hardy詩批評의 推移

        유관 서울産業大學校 1995 논문집 Vol.41 No.1

This essay aims to survey the general trend of criticism of Thomas Hardy's poetry. For a period of nearly 100 years since Wessex Poems, his first book of poems, appeared in 1989, judgements on hem as a poet have extremely varied from slurs cast on him as ‘Infidel,’‘Immoralist,’‘Pessimist,’ etc., to praises of him as ‘my poetrical father,’‘the greatest poet England has produced for a century,’‘the greatest and most versatile English author after Shakespeare’ etc. This kind of critical spectrum, therefore, makes it necessary for us first to ascertain his rightful place as a poet in Modern English poetry in order to keep a balanced critical perspective when approaching him in earnest.

      • Lyotard의 Postmodernism論

        劉琯鉉 서울産業大學校 1990 논문집 Vol.31 No.1

This study is about Lyotard's essay “Answering the Question: What is Postmodernism?” Many definitions of postmodernism focus on its nature as the aftermath of the industrial age in the Western culture. Lyotard, in his essay, discursively observes how reality in art and literature is ebbing in the present Western society which is variously called media society, consumer society, bureaucratic society of controlled consumption, postindustrial society, etc. He puts under suspicion Habermas who demands communicative consensus, believing that it results in totality and terror. And he defends artistic experimentation of avantgardes, basing his arguments on Kant's aesthetics of the sublime.

      • 대학 영어독해 지도를 위한 제안

        유관,강현숙 서울産業大學校 2002 논문집 Vol.53 No.1

Currently, most English reading classes in Korea are still pursuing the long tradition of grammar translation method, not only in the instruction itself, but also in tests following the instruction. However, intensive teaching of grammar and translation hasn't brought much successful results in enhancing effective reading. The purpose of this paper is to integrate the new trend of language teaching paradigm into classrooms. This paper will briefly review, first, the notion of reading and its processes including schema theory. Secondly, factors that need to be considered when planning reading class are examined. They are characteristics of receptive language skills, critical literacy, student autonomy, alternative assessment, culture education, vocabulary instruction and reflective teaching. Thirdly, how the considerations can be applied in classrooms is discussed. Many possible suggestions are included. Some suggestions are from the real classroom applications which have been tried already in the present writers' classrooms. When the mentioned theories are applied into reading instructions, it is possible that reading class will have more variety and yield more effective reading.
