LOCAL MEAN AGES OF AIR IN A ROOM WITH MULTIPLE INLETS

This paper considers the age of air in a ventilated space with multiple supply inlets; the local mean age (LMA) of air is di®erent from one inlet to another in multiple supply inlet situations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate theoretically the relations between theLMAs arising from each supply inlet and the overall combined LMA for all inlets. Transient concentration distributions are calculated using a CFD package in a simple room con¯guration with two inlets and one outlet, to verify the relations. Tracer gases are injected with a step-up method at each supply inlet individually,and at both inlets simultaneously. As a result, it can be found that the steady state concentration, with a continuous tracer injection at each supply inlet, works as a weighting factor for the corresponding LMA in calculating the overall combined LMA for the multiple inlet situations.

This study has been conducted in order to develop a temperature-controlled round pan diffuser with variable-openings. Flow visualization was performed to investigate the airflow patterns according to gap openings. The velocity profiles were measured using an omni-directional anemometer for two cases, i.e. a horizontal and a vertical discharge conditions. Numerical simulation also confirms there is a narrow range of gap openings where a horizontal discharge shifts to a vertical discharge. The air distribution performance index increases abruptly when the air discharge shifts from vertical to horizontal direction.
EFFECT OF CONDENSATION ON THE EFFICIENCY OF HEAT RECOVERY VENTILATORS FOR BROILER HOUSES

This study experimentally investigates the e®ect of internal condensation on the performance of a heat recovery ventilator. Experiments were performed using a plate-type sensible heat exchanger element that was designed for very humid and dusty environments such as chicken broiler houses. The results of these experiments show that the temperature e±ciency considering condensation is always greater than that without considering latent heat. As outdoor temperature decreases or indoor relative humidity increases, temperature e±ciency increases owing to an increase in the rate of condensation. The present polypropylene-based sensible heat exchanger element could be a solution for harsh environments because it can discharge condensate water by gravity and is resistant to moisture and other toxic gases.
