While the main research topics in the 1970s and 1980s on the excavator were about maximizing the performances of the excavators, since the 2000s, the main research interests have been changed to the developments of the eco-friendly, high-efficient, and intelligent excavators. Moreover, due to many environmental problems, such as the oil depletion, high CO2 levels, and fine dust, the research field on the development of the eco-friendly technologies have been growing rapidly. Especially, because the energy consumption of the excavator is very high, many researchers are trying to develop energy-efficient excavators. In the present study, we apply an idle-stop technology to the excavator to maximize its energy efficiency, study experimental methods and conditions to measure the improvements of the energy efficiency with the idle-stop technology, and finally, verify the effectiveness of the idle-stop technology through experiments.
