Vol.31 No.5

The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of an automatic stepper that can be an easy exercise for the elderly who are experiencing difficulties in physical activity at a point in time when the need for exercise and reduction of physical activity in the elderly is being emphasized through COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to investigate the physiological changes of a sedentary automatic stepper through changes in energy consumption and changes in vascular elasticity variables. The subjects of this study were 8 male and 9 female aged 83 years old. 30 minutes of automatic stepper exercise was performed. Blood pressure, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, arterial stiffness and lactic acid were measured before and after exercise, and energy consumption was measured through heart rate, oxygen intake, METs, and cumulative calorie consumption before and during exercise for 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes. The results of this study showed that systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressure all decreased after exercise in the male elderly, but there was no statistically significant change. In addition, the cumulative calorie consumption of both male and female elderly increased statistically significantly(p<.000), but there was no significant change in the vascular elasticity variable. This study tried to examine whether the effect of automatic stepper exercise can be applied to the elderly male and female, but only showed a significant increase in the cumulative energy consumption. In addition, changes in vascular elasticity were examined, but exercise intensity was low, and it was difficult to study vascular elasticity by sitting and continuing topical exercise. In future research, it is considered that it is necessary to develop an automatic stepper exercise program suitable for various subjects, such as the elderly, the disabled, and patients who need to exercise safely, and to examine the effect in depth with various variables.
