취업준비생의 외모도구성 신념이 자아존중감에 미치는 영향: 신체감시와 신체수치심의 매개효과

현대사회를 살아가는 취업준비생에게 외모가 하나의 스펙으로 작용할 것이라는 생각이 만연하게 자리잡고 있다. 하지만 취업준비생이 가지는 외모의 사회적 유용성에 대한 신념이, 그들의 정신 건강에는 어떠한 영향을 미치고 있는지에 관한 연구는 제한적이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 취업준비생이 지니는 외모도 구성 신념이 그들의 낮은 자아존중감을 예측할 것으로 예상하였으며, 이러한 과정에서 신체감시와 신체 수치심을 매개변인으로 제시하여 영향력을 미치는 경로를 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울, 인천, 경기 지역의 취업준비생 301명을 대상으로 설문을 실시하였으며, 수집된 자료는 구조방정식 모형을 이용해 검증하였다. 그 결과, 취업준비생이 지니는 외모도구성 신념이 낮은 자아존중감에 미치는 직접적인 영향력은 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이와 함께 외모도구성 신념이 낮은 자아존중감을 유발할 때 신체감시의 매개효과가 유의한 것으로 나타났으며, 신체수치심의 매개효과 또한 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 외모도구성 신념이 신체감시와 신체수치심을 이중매개로 낮은 자아존중감을 예측하는 것으로 확인하였다. 이를 통해 외모도구성 신념과 자아존중감의 관계에서 신체감시와 신체수치심이 완전매개효과를 지니는 것으로 해석되었다. 이상의 연구결과를 바탕으로 현대사회에서 나타나는 외모도구성에 대한 사회적 통념이 개인에게 가져오는 부정적 효과에 대해 알렸으며, 상담적·교육적 개입의 필요성을 논하였다. 끝으로 본 연구의 제한점과 후속연구를 위한 제언을 포함하였다. For job applicants in modern society, the idea that their appearance would be one of the key competencies for their future career is widely pervasive. However, there is minimal research on how job applicants’ social instrumentality of appearance would affect their mental health. The present study hypothesized that job applicants’ social instrumentality of appearance would lower their self-esteem, assuming body surveillance and body shame would mediate this process. For this purpose, 301 job applicants in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province in Korea completed the survey, and the collected data were analyzed via structural equation modeling (SEM). As a result, it was found that the direct influence of the social instrumentality of appearance of job applicants on low self-esteem was not significant. In addition, when social instrumentality of appearance induces low self-esteem, the indirect mediating effect of body surveillance was found to be significant, and the indirect mediating effect of body shame was also significant. Finally, it was confirmed that the social instrumentality of appearance predicts low self-esteem by the dual mediation of physical monitoring and body shame. Through this, it was interpreted that in the relationship between social instrumentality of appearance and self-esteem, body monitoring and body shame have a completely mediating effect. Based on the above research results, the social instrumentality of appearance in modern society has been informed of the negative effects that social norms have on individuals, and the need for counseling and educational interventions was discussed. Limitations of this study and suggestions for subsequent studies are included.
