A driving simulator is a comprehensive development tool that can be applied effectively to vehicle safety improvement by reproducing various driving conditions and situations realistically in a safe and controlled environment. In this research, a human factor study has been performed to analyze driver behavior under the influence of alcohol, using a fixed-base driving simulator developed at Kookmin University. By reproducing dangerous driving situations safely, the driving experiment has been performed successfully and the resultant driver and vehicle behavior has been analyzed systematically

The most important component in a driving simulator is a visual system due to the dominance of vision on human perception of the driving environment. This paper describes development of the improved visual system for a driving simulator creating high fidelity 3D images and including a scenario control system. The system operates on a PC level with a high performance 3D graphic accelerator and a projector as a display system. This paper also describes DIS(Distributed Interactive Simulation) system implemented to combine and operate two driving simulators in the same virtual space and database.<br/>

A fixed-base driving simulator has been developed in this study for human factor study and vehicle system development. The simulator consists of improved and synergistic subsystems including a real-time vehicle simulation system, a visual/audio system and a control force loading system. This paper describes the system components and its applications such as hardware-in-the-loop simulation for ABS(Antilock Brake Systems) and DIS(Distributed Interactive Simulation).<br/>
