This paper presents Optimum Design of Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) type Motor by using Response Surface Method (RSM) and Finite Element Method (FEM). Optimum Design focuses on reducing torque ripple and cogging torque of IPM type motor. When the driver rides the vehicle where Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system is applied, torque ripple and cogging torque affect the driver’s steering feeling. Recently, the research on MDPS system adopting IPM type motor is widely performed since it has an advantage of high power density when compared with Surface-mounted Permanent Magnet (SPM) type motor. In this paper, the new Optimum Design method of IPM type motor is proposed and the design method is validated by the test result of prototype sample.
