Ibuprofen (2, 4' -isobutylphenylpropionic acid, "Brufen" of the Boots Co., Ltd. England) is a new drug in the field of anti-inflammatory, analgetic and antipyretic medicaments'''s'''') The authers have carried out a clinical study of the Burfen's effects on surgical patients. Thirty patients comprise the present study and they are; infection of soft tissue 6 cases, arterial and vein surgery of extremity 10 cases, thyroid surgery 5 cases, mastectomy 4 cases and traumatic injury of soft tissue 5 cases. 18 cases were male and 12 cases were female, and their age ranged from 14 to 65 year old. Brufen was administered per os 2 tablets three to four times daily for an average of 7 days after sustaining injury. Prior to administration of Brufen, each lesion was carefully measured for swelling, hematoma by centimeters in diameter, inflammatory changes in light, medium and severe degrees and pain by subjective complaints. The results are shown in the following tables and are also summarized as follows; 1. Brufen was effective on inflammatory lesions by 83.3 per cent and not effective by 16.7 per cent. 2. It was extremely effective on no infective surgical wound swelling by 50 per cent, moderately so by 35.7 per cent. 3. On post-vascular surgical wound swelling it was extremely effective by 50 per cent and moderately so by 30 per cent. 4. Brufen's analgetic effects paralleled with it's anti-inflammatory effects.
