Having started in western, Christmas is one of the most common festivals that many Koreans celebrate with presents. Therefore, in this project, we tried fashioning some western style Christmas stuffs into Korean style ones by attaching Korean traditional patterns to them. In using Korean traditional patterns, we make a point of developing modernized and practical products.
We choose peony pattern for this project, which was one of those patterns people in every class liked most in Joseon period. For we think, among our various traditional patterns, this peony pattern gives us the impression of glory and abundance going so well with the Christmas festival mood that can be expressed most effectively by using it. Especially, our motif is peony pattern from Mrs. Chung's grave, which is considered to be most suitable for modernization. Because the pattern is arranged C-shaped form centering around its flower with leaves and stem.
We printed textile by digital textile printing system and for practical use processed it with water repellent finishing and soil repellent testing out wash fastness as well. After that we designed small pieces of Christmas stuffs such as table runner, place mat, glass mat, napkin, bread basket, oven gloves, and apron. As our main colors, picking out red and green representing Christmas season, we made each piece available both sides so that you can arrange and use it according to taste.
