2004 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.8 No.2

To investigate the effects of the acute exercise and the long-term aerobic training on carnitine concentration in skeletal muscle, we made Sprague-Dawley rats undergo the acute exercise and the long-term aerobic training (20-25 m/min, 10˚ incline, 60 min/day, 5 days/week, 12 weeks), then finally we came to conclusion like this. TC of liver decreased significantly in the AA (after 12 weeks acute exercise) group and the LE (12 weeks long-term exercise) group than in the AC (after 12weeks control) group (p<.05). The concentration of free carnitine in soleus muscle increased significantly in the LE group than in the AC group. In red-type gastrocnemius muscle, the concentration of free carnitine and total carnitine decreased significantly in the AA group, but increased significantly in the LE group, so consequently those kept the level of AC group (p<.05). In white-type gastrocnemius muscle, the concentration of long chain acylcarnitine increased in the AA group and LE group than in the AC group, especially increased in AA group (p<.05). In other hand, there was no difference among the groups in plantaris muscle. Camitine is quaternary amine related deeply with the aerobic metabolism, and their activation in coleus muscle, and red-type gastrocnemius muscle increased significantly. In this result, we can suppose that soleus muscle and red-type gastrocnemius muscle are consisted of suitable muscle fiber for aerobic metabolism.

2004 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.8 No.3

This study aims at evaluating the effect of acute exercise training (20 m-25 m/min, 60 min/day) and 12 wk exercise training (20 m-25 m/min, 60 min, 5 days/wk) on the mRNA expression of ACS and CPT-I in skeletal muscle, under hypothesis that exercise training induces lipid metabolism relates to genes. We used Sprague-Dawley rats that were randomly alloted into four groups such as control group, 12 wk non-exercise group, acute exercise group, and 12 wk exercise group. The mRNA expression of acyl-CoA synthetase (ACS) in soleus muscle was significantly higher in acute exercise group than that in non-exercise group. There was, however, no significant difference between red-type gastrocnemius muscles and white ones. The mRNA expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I (CPT-I) in the red-type gastrocnemius muscle was significantly higher in the acute exercise group than that in the control group (p<.05). In addition, the mRNA expression of both acyl-CoA synthetase and carnitine pal mitoyltran sferase-I in white-type gastrocnemius muscle was significantly higher in acute exercise group and 12 wk exercise group than that in the control group, but there was no significant difference between acute exercise group and 12 wk exercise group. On the other hand, no significant difference was made in the mRNA expression of ACS and CPT-I in plantaris muscle in each group. This study shows that the mRNA expression of ACS and CPT-I in both soleus and red-type gastrocnemius muscle significantly increased after 12 wk exercise. Therefore, it can be estimated that both coleus and red-type gastrocnemius muscles consist of muscle fibers adapted for aerobic metabolism. On the other hand, type Ⅱ muscle can, it is thought, adapt to aerobic metabolism, based upon the fact that the level of CPT-I mRNA in white-type gastrocnemius muscle was higher in acutely.

2002 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.6 No.2

Some vitamins have received much attention as a factor affecting exercise performance and fat metabolism. To investigate the effects of a high fat diet and/or exercise on vitamin status, young Sprague-Dawley rats were fed an AIN-76 diet or a modified high-fat AIN-76 diet, supplemented with 35% corn oil, for 30-days. During the 30-day period, half of the animals in each dietary group were exercised on a treadmill for 90 minutes per day. Total retinol and α-tocopherol concentrations in liver and ascorbic acid in plasma were determined. We found that a high-fat diet decreased plasma ascorbic acid concentration in the non-exercised animals, however, there were no changes in the exercised animals. Total liver retinol and α-tocopherol concentrations in the exercised animals on both normal and high-fat diets showed significantly higher values than those of the non-exercised animals. The data indicated that a assist high-fat diet has some decreasing effect on blood ascorbic acid level but exercise can make a recovery from this effect. The data also suggests that exercise has increasing effects on liver retinol and -tocoperol concentrations.
