According to previous studies riprap protected geotextile tube retaining structures are an excellent alternative for concrete structures because of its cost-effective and environmentally friendly construction methods. In this study, the effects of the changing volume of the dredged fill materials to the shape of the tube after the injection process is analysed. The geotextile tube used in the experiment has a diameter (D) of 0.7m and length (L) of 4.0m. The slurry used is prepared by mixing water and dredged soil on a mixing tank. The water content of the slurry is about 600% during injection. Results of this study can be used as the basis for the optimal shape design of polypropylene (pp) woven geotextile tubes.

In this study, the optimal shape of a custom-made polypropylene (PP) woven geotextile tube filled with landfill dredged sedment was investigated. An observation on the deformation behavior of the geotextile tube during filling and after dewatering was thoroughly conducted. A T-shaped inlet (patend application number: 10-2013-0090597) developed for this specific experiment was used to deliver the pumped dredged soil to fill the geotextile tube until tube height is equivalent to 50% it’s theoretical diameter. the changes in the gedtextile width and height measurement during and after slurry filling were constantly monitored and recorded. Measurements were conducted using special measuring staff on the outer shell of the geotextile tube. the effective tube height reduction at each measurement point on the geotextile tube ranges from 3,2% to 32% two days after the final slurry injection. In addition, geotextile strain varies depending on the amount of accumulated soil in the cross-section. Maximum strain occurs at the branch point with maximum cross-sectional area, however, the top and bottom geotextile sections shows minimal strain reading.

Geotextile tubes are water-permeable tubular structures made of woven polymeric polyester (PET) or polypropylene (PP) synthetic fibers hydraulically filled with dredged sand currently used as alternatives for embankment construction. In this paper, a large direct-shear test was performed on a soil sample with wooden block wrapped by geotextile to figure out shear property of soil-geotextile tube interface.
