Today, electricity is essential for the life of mankind and indispensable for the development of the nation. Electricity generated from renewable energy must increase to meet the increasing demand for electricity worldwide and to prepare for declining fossil fuels. It is also one of the renewable energy to use liquefied and gasified anthracite that has low utilization, which is not a gasification technology for the existing biomass. Furthermore, when unutilized Off-gas, which is discharged during the process of gasification and manufacturing coal-to-liquid(CTL) through FT(Fischer & Tropsch) reaction for unused coal, is used as the power generation fuel, Energy loss can be reduced and the economical efficiency can be further increased. In this study, we developed an engine that can utilize this low-calorie Off-gas, and studied the characteristics of an engine for a generator that produced electricity with high efficiency and low exhaust gas. A commercial diesel engine was converted to an spark ignition engine and a simulated gas was used as the Off-gas. The engine load was based on IMEP (Indicated Mean Effective Pressure) 3 bar and WOT (Wide Open Throttle) condition, the air-fuel ratio was from the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio to the lean limit, and the ignition timing of all conditions was MBT(Maximum Brake Torque). Through experiments, the fuel flow rate, output, efficiency, and variability of simulated gas, temperature, pressure data and exhaust gas were measured. Using simulated gas, the output of IMEP 3 bar and the maximum thermal efficiency 37% were achieved under the lean burn of WOT condition. The CO and NOx of the exhaust gas were influenced by the lean area, and the CO emission was satisfied with the US Tier 4 standard for nonroad engine over the full lean area.

FT process is a technology of chemical reactions that converts a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbons. During the FT process unreacted gas, known as Off-gas which has low-calorie, is discharged. In this study, we developed an engine that utilize simulated Off-gas, and studied the characteristics of the engine. The off-gas composition is assumed to be H2 70%, CO 15%, CO2 15% respectively. Under stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, the experiment was conducted at WOT and IMEP 0.3 Mpa changing compression ratio. Ignition timing was applied with MBT timing. Maximum indicated thermal efficiency 37% was achieved at compression ratio 15 under WOT. CO, CO2 and NOx were influenced by changing compression ratio, and CO emission was satisfied with the US Tier 4 standard for nonroad engine over the entire experimental conditions.
