The addendum surfaces which are designed and modeled in the metal forming simulation software tools cannot be used in the downstream processes such as machining and making the draw dies, because the simulation tools use a simple discrete mesh model for the surface geometry. The downstream processes require more precise and continuous geometric model such as NURBS surface. Generally, automotive die engineers manually re-create the geometry of addendum surfaces using the mesh model. This paper presents an automated geometric modeling process for the addendum surfaces using the mesh surface model which is generated in a metal forming simulation tool. The design parameters of the profile curve for the addendum surfaces are automatically extracted from the mesh surface. Smooth addendum surfaces are automatically generated as NURBS surfaces using the extracted design parameters. The generated surface is G1 continuous with the part surface and the binder surface.
