고데기는 헤어드라이어만큼 많은 여성들이 빈번하게 사용하는 헤어 기기 중 하나이다. 이 제품은 뜨거운 금속판의 열을 이용하여 머리카락의 모양을 변형하기 위해 사용하는데, 그 작동원리의 특성상 화상 등의 위험을 항상 내포하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 시중에 출시된 대부분의 고데기는 사용자가 온도를 인지하기 어렵게 설계되어 있거나 혹은 사용 중 온도조절이 어렵도록 설계되어 있다. 본 연구에서는 시중 고데기의 (온도관련) 문제점을 개선하여 새로운 디자인을 제안하는 것에 그 목적을 두었다. 설문조사와 실물모형(mock-up)을 통한 분석을 통해 두 가지 대안적인 디자인을 제안하였다. 먼저 Type A 는 시각적 피드백 (불빛색깔)을 통해 사용자가 온도를 인지할 수 있도록 설계하였고, Type B 는 촉각적 피드백 (조절버튼)을 통해 사용자가 온도를 인지할 수 있도록 설계하였다. 검증결과 사용자들은 시각적 피드백을 제공하는 Type A 를 가장 만족스러운 개선안으로 평가하였다. Curling iron is one of the most popular hair-related beauty appliances. It is used to shape one's hair using heated flat metal inside of the device. Although its use is widespread, it has potential safety issues because of its mechanism of using hot metal. Nevertheless, most curling irons in the market are designed such that users have difficulty in recognizing or controlling its temperature. In this study, we aimed at making design suggestions for curling irons in the market by improving their temperature-related issues. We propose two alternative designs of curling hair as a result of survey and simulations using mock-ups. Type A provided visual feedback by light color attached to the device; Type B provided tactile feedback by physical button attached to the device. Users in the usability test evaluated that Type A which offers visual feedback is more convenient in the use of curling iron.
