A Variable intake system is used to boost low to medium speed torque without any drawback in fuel consumption or high speed power, thus improve flexibility of the engine. An ordinary fixed intake manifo1d has its geometry optimized for high speed power, or low torque, or a compromise between them. The variable intake system improves power of an engine with variable intake valve, which is operated by an actuator, according to engine's speed. However, the on/off type actuators, such as vacuum type and motor type, are not good enough to improve power of an engine in a whole period of speed. In this study, the variable intake valve actuator with a built-in Electric drive board and Non-contact type angle position sensor was developed and tested. The goal was to develop the actuator controlled by PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) method, making linear control possible according to the PWM input signal from an ECU.
