본 연구는 사회과교육의 본질적 성격에 뿌리를 둔 사회과 고유의 평가관을 찾아 그 성격과 논리를 규명하고, 사회과 평가 논의나 실천에 성찰적 시각을 제공하는 데에 목적이 있었다. 특히, 본 연구는 현재의 주류적인 사회과 평가 관련 논의들이 ‘사회과’의 측면보다는 ‘평가’의 차원에 무게중심을 두고 있다고 판단하면서, 이런 시각을 바꾸어 사회과의 본질에 대한 천착의 논리적 결과로 이어진 사회과 평가관을 체계적으로 검토해 보고자하였다. 이를 위해 우선 사회과 평가관의 선정 준거를 설정하고, 이 준거에 부합하는 대상을 쟁점중심 사회과교육 관련 주요 저술들 속에서 찾았다. 그 결과 Hunt & Metcalf, Oliver & Shaver, 그리고 Ochoa-Becker의 접근에 주목하게 되었다. 이어 이들 세 가지 평가관의 기본 가정과 개념, 그리고 구체적인 평가 전략 및 기법에 관해 구체적으로 검토하였다. 나아가 세 평가관을 비교ㆍ분석하면서 각각의 의미와 논점, 그리고 한계에 관해 논의하였다. 이 과정에서 다루어진 주요 주제는 선다형 검사의 가치, 가치 평가 딜레마, 그리고 사회과 평가의 민주주의 지향성 등이었다. 본 연구에서 다루어진 세 가지 평가관과 그에 수반된 논점들은 수행평가와 표준화 검사라는 지금의 모순적인 사회과 평가 흐름 속에서 우리가 고민해야 할 대상과 밀접히 관련을 맺는다. 또한 이들에 대한 성찰은 교실 수준에서 사회과 평가를 의미 있게 구현하기 위한 노력의 시발점이 될 수도 있다. The present study aimed at tracing the footsteps of the social studies-specific evaluation frameworks and shedding some lights on the ongoing discourses on and practical implementation of social studies evaluation. It was originally motivated from the recognition that we, social studies educators, have tended to place far more concerns over the 'evaluation' side rather than 'social studies' dimension in the concept of 'social studies evaluation.' This inquiry was an attempt to reverse the viewpoint. In other words, we were interested in reviewing the social studies evaluation frameworks which have been derived, as logical outcomes, from the intellectual investigations into the nature of social studies. As one of best candidates that might have contained such endeavors, the writers scrutinized the issues-centered social studies tradition and came up with the three evaluation perspectives which satisfied the criteria preset for the study; they were social studies evaluation frameworks suggested by Hunt & Metcalf, Oliver & Shaver, and Ochoa-Becker. The first work done was the systematic overview of each perspective. It was followed by the comparison and contrast of the three. In the final section of the study, three themes were discussed in close consultation with the three models of social studies evaluation. The themes were (1) values of multiple-choice test, (2) dilemmas of value evaluation, and (3) democratic orientation of the social studies evaluation.
