Recently, improvement of vehicle economy at low temperature operating condition has become an issue. Utilizing waste heat of exhaust gas is effective to improve the overall vehicle economy. The exhaust heat recovery system transfers the thermal energy from “hot” exhaust gas to “cold” engine coolant, and heated coolant reduces engine warm-up time. Therefore, it is possible that vehicle economy is enhanced by reduced engine fiction loss. The current work evaluated the effect of the exhaust heat recovery system applied to the PHEV engine. Results showed an improvement of warm-up time for the engine thermal management system by use of the heat recovery system. Moreover, the warm-up characteristics were analyzed according to the variation of the thermal management system layout.

Recently, the electric driven auxiliary vacuum pump is becoming widely used to assist braking performance of vehicle. In this paper, the performance of the vane type vacuum pump is analyzed by computational fluid dynamic method. The characteristic of the flow rate and pulsation of discharge pressure is predicted on the vacuum pump including an vane, rotor and cam ring. Also, the influence on the performance of the various design factors of discharge port has been investigated such as position size and number of hall.

Recently, A number of researchers have focus their attention on reusing thermal energy of waste heat in exhaust gas. The exhaust heat recirculation system is one of the waste heat recovery system. It reduces engine warming up time by elevating coolant temperature quickly by heat transfer between coolant and exhaust gas. Therefore, it is possible that vehicle economy is enhanced by the reduced engine fiction loss. This paper presents the performance estimation of exhaust heat recirculation device by computational fluid dynamic method. Moreover, heat transfer characteristics are analytically investigated via operating conditions.

An ATF heat exchanger reduces transmission warming up time by elevating the ATF temperature quickly and regulates the temperature appropriately to ensure lubricating characteristics by heat transfer between the coolant and ATF. In another aspect, heat transfer from the coolant to the ATF causes insufficient energy to heat the cabin. In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of the plate type ATF heat exchanger is analyzed. the flow pattern of Coolant control valve is analyzed by the computational fluid dynamic method. The influence on fuel economy vehicles With a plate type ATF heat exchanger integrating a coolant control valve have been investigated.

Corresponding to the regulations with noise fuel consumption, the semi-active muffler applying the exhaust valve is becoming widely used. The exhaust valve is seated on the inside of the muffler for achieving the function of noise reduction and enhanced back pressure. In this paper, the performance of the butterfly type exhaust valve is analyzed by computational fluid dynamic method. The characteristic of the flow pattern and applied hydraulic torque is predicted on the exhaust valve with respect to a opening ratio. Also, the influence on the performance of the various operating condition and design factor has been investigated such as exhaust gas flow rate and temperature.

Steering system is a one of major safe device in vehicle. Universal shaft adopted in steering system transmits steering torque between steering column and steering gear and protect the driver from being damaged by an accident. Conventionally, universal shaft is composed of two components, i.e. shaft and pipe. Two components are connected by a bellows or serration linkage. In this paper, structural analysis is achieved for a serration type non-weld forged universal joint. A simple universal shaft model is proposed to simplify the structural analysis process, the parameter study is performed to evaluate the effect on the structural analysis of the design parameters such as thickness of universal shaft, shape and length of serration.
