Increasing the performance of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell is an important issue. Especially, generating more power per unit active area can make fuel cell small and light, and these characteristics are necessary in order to commercialize fuel cell. Although there are many ways to enhance the performance, improvement of the gas flow pattern is one of the key factors to diffuse reactants well and manage water efficiently. In this study, porous media was applied to the bipolar plate of cathode side as a flow distributor instead of using conventional serpentine flow field. Since porous media has high porosity and permeability, reactant gases can be distributed to whole active area evenly, and produced water is able to be removed well. So, we substituted porous media for conventional serpentine channel and compared the performance under different conditions.

The channels on the bipolar plate of fuel cell have many functions like flow path for hydrogen and air and passage for removing produced water, etc. So it is very important to design a channel geometry to get a better flow filed which can make gas provided well to MEA and also easily get rid of the produced water from inside of fuel cell to the outside of the fuel cell. In this study, we designed new bipolar plate which has a channels getting narrowed from inlet to outlet. We made the depth of channel gradually narrowed to get air flow fast inside the channel. And we have called it ‘inclined channel’. And then, we applied this inclined channel into cathode side of fuel cell where flooding easily occurs to get a better performance by removing a produced water efficiently. Eventually, we have got about 25.6% of performance improvement by applying this new bipolar plate having inclined channel.
