The present study investigates the needs and habits of Korean EFL college students in using English dictionaries. The data from the survey questionnaire revealed that about 60% of the students had never been taught how to use an English dictionary. Most students had at least one English dictionary, which, in most cases, was a English-Korean bilingual dictionary. Pocket electronic dictionary ownership included 38.6% of the students. The participants favored English-Korean dictionaries over English-English monolingual dictionaries particularly when finding meaning of unknown words was the main purpose. Other information such as pronunciation, usage, and examples was of secondary importance, and collocation information and the introduction in the front matter of a dictionary were almost never used. The most desired features in a dictionary were portability, quick and easy search, rich content, and comprehensibility.
