The availability of both potable water and air conditioning is becoming increasingly important to sustain an improved quality of life. In this regard, adsorption desalination (AD) cycle is an environmentally-friendly and yet low-cost desalination system that (i) utilizes a single low-temperature heat source, which is available in abundance from renewable energy sources or exhaust of industrial processes, and (ii) produces two useful effects, such as high-grade fresh water and cooling capacity for air conditioning. This paper presents the performances of the AD pilot plant employing silica gel and water vapor as an adsorbent–adsorbate pair, housed in the laboratory of Hanyang University. The performances of the AD cycle are extensively evaluated in terms of specific daily water production (SDWP) and specific cooling capacity (SCC) for assorted operation conditions.

Seawater desalination by an adsorption desalination (AD) system shows merits of its environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient technology. Moreover, using a single low-grade heat input, the AD cycle produces two useful effects, namely the high-grade fresh water and the cooling capacity suitable for air-conditioning. In this paper, in order to evaluate the performance characteristics of AD system, theoretical model is developed based on the mass and energy balance equations and adsorbent characteristics. The model developed in this study is validated in comparison with previously published experimental data. The performance of AD system is assessed in terms of performance ratio (PR), specific daily water production (SDWP) and specific cooling capacity (SCP).
