Keio University Research Center for the Liberal Arts (ReCLA) was established in July, 2002. Its mission is to define the meaning and the value of liberal arts and construct the contents of education through research and practice. Its research involves integrating various scientia in different academic fields, inheriting the past scientia, re-establishing it in our age, and re-creating new scientia for the future generations. Based on the research, experimental practice, and its feedback, we have proposed curriculum for undergraduate education nurturing integrated and interdisciplinary viewpoint which will provide fertile ground for the academic specialty and future career of students. Thus the activities of ReCLA offer the Common ground of Knowledge uniting faculty members of different departments, students, and administration staff. Right at the moment, our research emphasizes the following points: One is on how the university creates the environments which provide the newly admitted students who, by the Japanese entrance exam system, have been forced to have narrow-scoped academic approach with new eyes to look at the things from various different aspects. The other is on how the university encourages the students to get the knowledge in a holistic way using alternative expression other than literary language. Human beings have passed down their knowledge employing language and their bodies. As the conveyer of the knowledge, we should be conscious of the potentiality of our physical existence. In this paper, I would like to introduce some of these trials at Keio University.
