        Measuring the regional productivity convergence

        오정일(Jeunggil Oh) 한국정책분석평가학회 2004 政策分析評價學會報 Vol.14 No.1

Most studies have concentrated on the question of convergence of GDP per capita. Although GDP is the aggregate value added from a variety of regions. few studies have focused on the question of convergence of labor productivity at the disaggregated level of regions. This monograph studies the question of convergence of labor productivity at the disaggregated level of regions in Korea. The matrix of transition probabilities is used for this analysis. instead of the so-called Barro regression that is very often used in studies of convergence. Testing for convergence in Korea's 16 regions. the results of this research study indicate that regions have a variety of ergodic distributions of labor productivity. Very interesting evidence was also found. indicating that regions with relatively high labor productivity will have a bipolar distribution of labor productivity. Of course. more evidence needs to be accumulated in order to argue that this phenomenon is universal.

Measuring the Negative Effect of Fertility on Female Labor Supply

        문상호(Sangho Moon),오정일(Jeunggil Oh),신자은(Jaeun Shin) 한국정책분석평가학회 2005 政策分析評價學會報 Vol.15 No.1

The labor force participation(LFP) of married women in Korea has increased sharply since the 1980s. The aim of this paper is to estimate the effect of fertility on the decision of labor force participation of married women in Korea. The instrumental variable (IV) method is employed to resolve possible endogeneity between fertility and LFP decision by married women. We find that the sex of the first child would be a good IV for the fertility. Estimation results suggest that having a child reduces the LFP of married women by 30.7%. This figure is much larger than the negative effect of the sibling estimated through simple logit model. Our empirical results imply that affordable child care facilities and various part-time jobs will help married women to participate in the labor market.
