        This study was conducted to investigate the physical symptoms by postures and conditions of used chairs and desks for 515, 6th-grade students in an elementary school in Koryung-kun, Kyeongsangbukdo from December 20, 1997 to March 30, 1998. Children who have experienced trunk and low back pain were the higher 44.1%, low extremities 29.1%, neck 27.8%, upper extremities and shoulders 19.6%, gluteal pain 14.7% in the physical symptoms by using chairs and desks in class. Children(10.7%) who sat uprightly were lower than the others(71.8%) in a posture seated an the chair. Forward hyperflexion was the highest 63.8%, backward hyperextension 21.9%, left and right bending 11.9% in the reason why didn't sit in a correct posture. In the distribution of a posture seated an the chair by gender, boys 72.7% that answer a wrong posture were similar to girls' 70.9%, girls forward hyperflexion 69.1% was higher than boys' that 58.9%, boys' backward hyperextension 29.2% was higher than girls' that 14.0%, and girls' left and righ lateral flexion 14.0% was a sightly higher than boys' that 9.9% in the reason of wrong postures. There were upper extremities and shoulders(P=0.001), trunk and low bask pain(P=0.001) and low extremities pain(P=0.001) in the significant variables associated with height of desk compare to pain part of bodies. Children who answered low(each 34.7%, 33.9%, 46.7%) were higher than that of high(7.9%, 3.5%, and 7.3%). The significant variables related to the height of chairs and physical symptoms were neck(P=0.001), upper extremities and shoulders (P=0.003), trunk and low back(P=0.001), gluteus(P=0.001), and low extremities(P=0.001). Children' s physical symptoms rates are 34.3%, 34.6%, 33.0%, 40.8%, and 37.3% that answer low were higher than those of others' 5.6%,6.9%, 4.8%, 1.3%, and 8.0%, each others. The relationship between physical symptoms and seatpan, trunk and low back pain(P=0.006), gluteal pain(P=0.001) were significant variables. Broad in seatpan condition 11.4% was similar to narrow 11.0% in trunk and low back pain. Narrow in seatpan condition 25.0% was higher than broad 9.2% in gluteal pain. Trunk and low back pain was significantly associated with a posture seated an the chair(P=0.025), from Children' s 77.9% that answer a wrong posture.
