알레고리로서 제리 율스만(Jerry Uelsmann)의 사진 연구 -신비주의와 미국의 종교와 역사의 알레고리적 측면을 중심으로

Early in 1960s, Jerry Uelsmann made a collage image from the several negative films that are individually taken and combined in a dark room. His photo collages are like the images corrected by the Photoshop computer program in 1990s. The quality is technically very high. Jerry Uelsmann`s images are metaphoric and very creative. The images that he made seem to have a mood of mysticism. They look like surrealism painting or symbolism painting. For this reason, it`s not easy to understand his products in many ways. His images require a total knowledge in culture, history and religion along with an intuitional understanding about them. Especially, Uelsmann`s images seem more difficult to those who are from the other culture than America. But he carefully installed some items sequentially that contain certain special meanings in his photo collages. They are somewhat allegorical and reading the allegory is an important key to understand Jerry Uelsmann`s image world. Thus, I think it is almost impossible to read of the correct meaning from one single image. Instead, grouping of single images with same mood or same nuance and figuring out the meaning from them can lead us to meet some secret narratives come from Jerry Uelsmann`s unconsciousness. Also, to understand his images, we need to separate the repeated motives from them and to extract the essence from them as the first step. We should avoid missing the little hint or mood of each image. Another ability such as to concern of the meaning hidden in his context of symbol, culture, history and religion is required. His images can be disassembled into several repeated themes, moods, etc. and then reconstructed in the category of same meaning, nuance and mood. Finally, the puzzle an image completed from Jerry Uelsmann`s bunch of collage images show us the new meaning and the new context. Jerry Uelsmann`s compounded collage images reveal that they are the allegory related to the dark American memories and history. Now Jerry Uelsmann`s allegory images begin to tell a secret story about him and the dark unconsciousness of his country itself.
