Vol.49 No.1

The witches` broom disease of Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud with which mycoplasmalike organisms are associated is widespread throughout Korea and poses serious threat to the cultivation of paulownia. Attempt was made to investigate the feasibility of field control of the disease with oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC). A total of 84 paulownia trees (6 year-old, DBH: 10-15㎝) exhibiting severe symptoms of witches` broom were selected and treated during March to September. Solution of 1-10g of OTC dissolved in 0.12.0 of water was transfused into infected trees with gravity flow method from a dark-brown colored plastic reservoir (11 volume) through plastic tubes (1.2m long) connected to 2-4 holes (5 ㎜ in diameter and 4-5㎝ in depth) bored in the basal part of the tree trunks (Fig. 1 and 2). Of 60 diseased paulownia trees injected with 2g of OTC in 0.1-2.01 of water during May to September, 1979, 58 trees resulted in complete remission of symptom development and resumption of healthy new growth at least up to September, 1980 when the last observation of the effect of OTC treatment for this experiment was made. The rest of two trees were dead probably due to too severe infection. Of 24 paulownia trees treated in March and April, 1979 complete remission of symptom development was obtained with 8 trees, and nine trees were partially prevented from symptom development in the following season. The remaining 7 trees were dead due to failure in uptake of OTC and partly because the trees were in too far advanced stage of infection. Application of highly concentrated solution of 2g of OTC dissolved in 0.1-0.21 of water per tree was just as effective as the 2g/1-2l treatment. Injection of 2g/1-2l required 3-4 days while treatment of 2g/0.1-0.2l reduced the time for injecting one tree down to less than 24 hrs. The result of this experiment demonstrates that basal trunk injection of 2g OTC/0.1-0.2l/tree is feasible for field control of paulownia witches` broom, provided that tree injection is performed in actively growing season (May-September) and at the initial stage of disease development.

Vol.11 No.1

Oidium oxalidis McAlp., a powdery mildew fungus new to Korea, was found on the natural host plant Oxalis corniculata L.Mycelial density was evanescent, amphigenous and especially epiphyllous on both side of the leaf. The morphological characteristics of the imperfect state were examined. The conidia were ellipsoid-lemon shaped with an average diameter of 33×15㎛. They were lack of conspicuous fibrosin bodies. Production of germ tubes was on the end of conidia. Microconidia production was not observed. The conidiophores produced conidia singly. The length of conidiophores ranged 75∼150㎛. Very slender hyphae of 3∼5㎛ were typical. The appressoria on the hyphae were multilobed. No perfect state was found in Korea.

흰가루병균 Sphaerotheca fuliginea (Schlecht . ex Fr.) Poll . s. lat.

Vol.12 No.4

Sphaerotheca fuliginea (Schlecht, ex Fr.) Poll. has been recorded on 13 plant species in Korea, to which the authors add 10 additional host plants. The taxonomic concept of S. fuliginea proposed by Blumer in 1933 was adopted here.

        8. 흰가루병균 Sphaerotheca fuliginea (Schlecht . ex Fr.) Poll.

Vol.11 No.1

Eight plant species are known to be natural hosts of Sphaerotheca fuliginea(Schlecht. ex Fr.) Poll. in Korea. The authors found ten additional host plant species of S. fuliginca at Suweon campus of Seoul National University. They are Lactuca indica var. laciniata(O. Kuntze) Hara, Taraxacum platycarpum H. Dahlst., T. ohwianum Kitamura, T. coreanum Nakai, T. officinale Weber, Acalypha australis L., Cosmos bipinnatus Cav., Calendnla arvensis L., Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt., and C. lanceolata L. The morphological characteristics of the imperfect state as well as the perfect state of S. fuliginea were examined. Conidia were ellipsoidal to oval measuring 25∼32×14∼19㎛. They were characterized by their conspicuous fibrosin bodies. No microconidia production were observed. Conidiophores produced conidia in chains. Conidiophores were moderately long anal slightly swollen at the basal parts. Appressoria were n.ot conspicuous but unlobed indistinct. Germ tubes were produced on the side of conidia and the tips were broa

Vol.10 No.4

Wood-rotting fungi were collected in Suweon campus of Seoul National University from September 1981 to October 1982. These fungi were classified into 2 orders, 8 families, 22 genera and 34 species. Of these, Gloeoporus adustus (Willd. ex Fr.) Pila´t and G. dichrous (Fr.) Bres. were found to be new species that belong to unrecorded genus in Korea. Korean common names of these two new species were designated by the authors. List of the wood-rotting fungi was given with the generic name of host trees on which the fungus was collected.
