To enable self-reliance activities of daily living (ADL) of patients with neuromuscular disorder, weight bearing orthosis (WBO) is prescribed to the patients. A passive WBO using elastic element such as rubber band and spring is the most widely used equipment for a daily living aids. The passive WBO use linkage structure to exert an assistive fore in the desired direction and this linkage structure is an important factor that determine the performance and usability of the WBO. If the mobility of the linkage is limited, the performance and comfortability of the WBO is reduced while the usability is reduced if the linkage structure become complex to increase mobility. To identify the design criteria to improve everyday usage of WBO, effect of the joint configuration of the WBO to its functionality and usability is analyzed. For the experiment, 10 ADL tasks are selected and the subjective usability and objective comfortability are measured by using visual analogue scale and pressure pad.
