맥락기반 수학프로그램인 ‘Mathematics in Context’의 학교적용 효과성 연구

본 연구는 맥락기반 수학프로그램인 Mathematics in Context(이하 MiC)를 우리 학교현장에 적용했을 때 학생들의 수학문제해결능력과 수학학습태도 및 인식의 변화에 어떤 영향을 미치는지와 본 프로그램을 보다 효과적으로 학교현장에 적용하기 위해 요구되는 사항들이 무엇인지를 확인하기 위해 실시되었다. 이를 위해 전라남도 광양 소재 초등학교 1개교에 재학 중인 4학년 6개 학급 전체 학생들에게 MiC 프로그램을 한 학기동안 매주 3시간씩 실시하였으며, MiC 프로그램의 효과성을 평가하기 위해 서울 서초구 소재 초등학교 1개교에 재학 중인 4학년 4개 학급 전체 학생들이 비교집단으로서 본 연구에 참여하였다. 연구결과 MiC 프로그램에 참여한 실험집단 학생들이 비교집단 학생들보다 수학문제해결능력검사에서 상대적으로 높은 성취결과를 나타내었으나, 그 차이는 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다. 하지만 수학의 활용 영역에 대한 인식에 있어 실험집단 학생들이 비교집단 학생들보다 통계적으로 유의하게 높은 긍정적 결과를 나타내보였다. 또한 MiC 프로그램에 참여한 학생들과 교사들은 본 프로그램이 수학적으로 사고하는 태도와 능력을 계발하는데 효과적이라고 인식하고 있었다. 하지만 MiC 프로그램에 참여한 교사들은 MiC 프로그램이 교육 현장에서 좀 더 효과적으로 적용되기 위해서는 본 프로그램 운영과 관련된 교사연수의 확대, 수준별 학습자료의 개발, 우리 상황 중심의 활동 개발 등이 필요하다고 제안하였다. The main purpose of this study was to examine what effects MiC (Mathematics in Context), context-based mathematics instruction, has on students" mathematical problem-solving ability and their attitude toward mathematics learning as well as their perception on MiC when MiC was administered to the classroom settings in Korea. For this study, fourth-grade students in six classes in Kwang-yang, Jeon-nam were instructed through MiC three periods per week for one semester. In addition, fourth graders in four classes in Seoul participated in the study as a contrast group. The results of the study showed the following. Students in the MiC group were better in mathematical problem-solving ability than the contrast group although the difference was not significant. Students" perception on the areas in which mathematics can be applied, however, was significantly wider in the MiC group than in the contrast group. Meanwhile, students and teachers in the MiC group perceived the program very effective in developing students" positive attitudes toward mathematics learning as well as their mathematical reasoning. However, for the program to be applied more effectively in the school settings, teachers in the MiC Group suggested necessity of more systematic teacher-training programs, developing different workbook by different students" achievement levels, and creating teaching and learning activities based on social and cultural context of the country.
